That's was an experience and a lesson must learned...

What do you mean lesson learned? Balanced fund must have a long-term investment horizon of at least 5 years...so whatever corrections happening must be irrelevant.

The lesson there is, its a good thing he invested in a fund that is apt for his investment
timeframe. He can therefore ignore the market noises

5 years long term, really? It is questionable because you mentioned "whatever corrections happening must be irrelevant"

1st time ko mag invest. pag check ko ngayon paper loss agad :( good thing I am planning to keep my capital at least 3 years and plan ko rin mag cost averaging. :watchuthink:
ang problem ko ngayon ay nadiscourage yung mother ko mag invest, mahina kasi loob pag dating sa mga ganyang investment. how can I convince her? sayang kasi nasa savings account lang yung pera at di naman ginagamit.

Give her time. Show her how much your investment has grown in 6 months or one year. In the meantime, let her read books and trusted internet sources so she can understand the risks and rewards.

I mentioned at least 5 years. And that's the minimum recommended time frame by most banks if you ask them.

Also, what do you mean by this:

"I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not reopen it for five years."
- Warren Buffett

It means you are buying the company for itself, and you would not
care what the market thinks of it. you know its a good buy hence even
if the market price of its stock is down, you would not pay any mind(referring
to the line where it says even if it[market] closed down)

@spartacus, although past performance does not guarantee future
results you can go ahead and let her see how equity funds usually work.

Very volatile in the short term but will always be on the uptrend over the long term.
The longer the term, the better the chances of not having a negative return.

Don't convince your mother to stick with equity fund.  It is not made for our parents.  Younger generations may benefit but senior years may only get higher risks.

When I invested January this year, natuwa ako sa bilis ng taas, so I invested again every month, by May15 I checked I have already gained 3M, not bad considering January lang ako nag start. Pero after May15 ambilis bumagsak, diko masyado maintindihan but I just trusted my gut feel & yesterday I finally pulled out all my BDO UITFs, yung profit na 3M nawala, naging 1.1M nalang ang profit... Kakahinayang pero I have no regrets. I learned a lot during these 5 months and overall still happy with my gain.  :cool2:
