Every month, the PMT Forum honors one outstanding member of the PMT community to be awarded as the "Member of the Month".

Our "Member of the Month" is chosen among members who are seen as consistently active, dependable, insightful, and friendly in the forum. He or she, therefore, may be considered as a genuine role model in our forum community. For us to know better our "Member of the Month," we request our awardee to answer a few questions. Other members of the forum may also post in this thread to ask our MotM questions.

Our July 2013 Member of the Month is
TSO! Congratulations! :yehey:

Here are TSO's responses to our questions.

July 2013 Member of the Month: TSO

1. Hi TSO! How long have you been a PMT Forum member? Share to us how you discovered PinoyMoneyTalk.

I was a member for five years, since I was a sophomore back in 2008. I just wanted to lurk in the forums, so you probably won't see any activity from me around that year, but after I entered the stock markets and got more experience under my belt, I became much more active and vocal and I've been at it since then.

How I found PMT was nothing special. Nobody referred it to me. Nobody recommended the site to me. I just stumbled into it on my own through googling anything related to Philippines and investing.

2. Why did you choose the username "TSO"?

"TSO" means "The Silent One". This was my username for the pRO Ragnaboards forum once hosted by Level Up! Games (currently defunct and replaced with another domain), and my intent for that was exactly the same: I wanted to be a lurker and just learn about the different job classes in Ragnarok Online. Foreshadowing my own experience here in PMT, once I did some more research and played the game some more, for some reason, I felt like I needed to become more active. I ended up helping newbs, discussing stuff with the experts, and even made a 100-page guide for a job class, as well as writing stories to post on the forum.

People actually made fun of me for having a username that completely contradicted my behavior, but it eventually stuck and people started calling me TSO by habit. Strangely enough, even on the phone.

So there you have it. The meaning behind my acronym and its rather humble origins.

3. What things do you like about the PMT Forum?

Other than my familiarity with the formatting and the like, it's really because there is a community of value investors here in PMT. Most of the places surrounding Philippine investments are dominated by market technicians. I don't have anything against technical analysis, but as far as stocks are concerned, I'm a pure hardcore fundamentalist with a focus on comprehensive business analysis, so when I revisited the PMT forum after a bout of lurking,  seeing an active Value Investing thread attracted my attention immediately and I jumped right on the bat, slamming the doors wide open with one post after another like I've been an active member all that time.

It's all because I felt like there was a place I could belong to and a place I could openly discuss and debate. Believe me, when you're in college, most of the people around you don't think about doing business, making money, or taking their studies seriously. They just prefer to stick to their high school mindset and focus 100% on wasting time... if you know what I mean ;)

4. Tell us something interesting that we don't know about you.

I drive to Houston four times a year to get into fights at an event hosted by an Arnis school there and make people bleed and earn battle scars at the same time just for the hell of it.

5. What are your hobbies or special interests?

Video games has always been a guilty pleasure. I'm also into writing stories on my own time. Other special interests include hiking, caving, and other outdoor stuff, but I absolutely refuse to do these things alone. Even if some people may find that fun, I don't.

6. What is your ultimate goal in life?

To achieve financial freedom early and explore the world.

7. In which income opportunities are you involved?

I'm working as an equity research analyst at a broker-dealer in Texas, but we've been trying to start a long/short equity hedge fund for some time. (It takes a REALLY long time to actually get one up and running, let alone raise enough capital to hit the millions!)

Also, my family business (run by my dad in the Phil) is booming and I intend to dive in and get really involved there in a year or two.

8. Share to us some tips you learned or you follow in order to succeed financially.

1. Save early. My first investment in the stock market was worth 50% of my life savings, which I'd been accumulating since 1st grade.
2. Entrepreneurship -- BUSINESS -- is the key to success. Businessmen are people who make things happen.
3. Study, study, study! Keep reading! There is so much the world has to offer and if you can't get out there to see it for yourself, then you can immerse yourself in it through other ways.
4. Be careful with your resources. Manage your risks. You don't succeed by blindly rushing into things like a fool. Familiarize yourself or stick to what you intimately know.
5. Following up on #4, be wary of idealism and other naive thoughts. It sounds really harsh, but from personal experience in life and market observations, human persons just aren't perfect and you're better off exploiting human nature. This is the crux of investing in general.
6. If you want to bring about positive change, start piecemeal, begin with the circles closest to you, and accept the fact it won't pass through to others 100% of the time.
7. Keep your eyes on the long haul. If your heart's not into it, don't worry. It'll follow eventually. (This can apply to love and relationships too!)
8. Corollary to #7: Exercise discipline and constant vigilance.
9. Have faith in yourself. Be confident in your plans and in the way you live your life.

Wait, there's more! Just for the heck of it...

a. Favorite movie? "District 9" left a mark on me up until the end because it reveals so much about human nature it overrode all my prior favorites.

b. Favorite song or music genres? Listening to Owl City's Shooting Star at the moment. Favorite genres... pop, rock, and epic background music from movies and videogames.

c. Favorite actor/actress? I don't particularly care about actors. I have a favorite director instead: Christopher Nolan. Anything he makes, I watch on the theaters ASAP.

d. Cat or dog? Used to be cat.... but now I like dogs... uhm... I dunno... both!

e. McDonald's or Jollibee? Jollibee

f.  Kapuso, Kapamilya or Kapatid? Kapuso

g. Money or fame? Money

h. Marry intelligent but ugly person or marry stupid but beautiful person? Intelligent. I can learn to love an ugly person anyway. The heart will follow.

i.  To love or be loved? To be loved. What's the point of loving someone if it's not mutual?

j.  Your motto in life? No matter what life throws at you, just keep walking with your eyes set on the path you want to take. There are many ways to get somewhere.

==========

Thanks and congrats again, TSO!

PMTers, now's your time to congratulate our July 2013 Member of the Month! :applause:

@ singkit: no differentiation between pasta, bread, and rice. I love all food. And laptop for me forever!

@ GS: we're into aquaculture, printing, and we've got a resort in batangas. That's the staple businesses.

@TSO,

I first got notice of Owl city after the hit song, fireflies, and all the rest of the other songs in the album, sadly, did not "connect" with me.  Maybe I will try to listen with Shooting star then.

You really made a lot of valuable contributions here in PMT and I do hope, someday, there will be a thousand TSOs' sharing their thoughts in this community.  If it does happen, I know our country will have a brighter future ahead than my generation.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, bauer. :D

Not as much as I'd like, but just enough to stay abreast of ongoing developments. I go through at least three different RSS feeds (it takes at least three hours a day to get through EVERYTHING I receive in my inbox), and I do read business or management related books every so often. (Currently reading Neil Smith's How Excellent Companies Avoid Dumb Things: Breaking the 8 Hidden Barriers that Plague even the Best Businesses and finishing up LJ Rittenhouse's Investing Between the Lines.)

Though not a VI nor an avid stock enthusiast, I appreciate what you do for the forum... so my belated congratulations, TSO!

A few questions:

1) How much of a drawdown can you tolerate as a VI before you give up on particular stock?

2) What are your personal strengths and weaknesses? How do these affect your investing?

3) Do you ever let your hair down or allow yourself to be silly/foolish? What are those occasions?

TIA! :-)

Sorry for the delayed response. Had stuff to do. Anyway:

1. No restriction on the drawdown, but my maximum tolerance is two years. Basically, a stock could fall down to 20% its original value and I couldn't care less so long as the corporate press releases indicate no real change in its economic moat and growth prospects.

2. I'm lazy and I'm easily distracted by video games, among other things when I have the capital for it (such as outdoorsy sh*t). Ergo, I tend to shy away from the regular company review that I'm supposed to do once a year or once every two years, and I'm not 100% committed to scouring the landscape for investment opportunities. Personally, this is pretty sad given the fact I have an abnormally high "hit rate".

3. When I'm with my close friends or you get me wasted and living the moment and I don't need to worry about preserving some sort of image (as is often the case when I'm on PMT, I'm at an investing con, or I'm engaged in business crap). I'm actually a kid at heart, but some people find that hard to believe given the way I normally act.
