Hi Guys,

I already have a long term investment in stocks and I also have my Emergency Fund.

Now I want to maximize my gain by investing my Emergency Fund also. What can you recommend for me wherein the investment is quite guaranteed to be gaining or having the lowest risk of losing at all. I also want my money to be withdrawable anytime. hehe

Thanks guys!  :D

Hi proudtobepinoy,

Yes, currently I'm using bpi savings and its annual increase rate is 0.750%. I was thinking of other ways higher than that. A friend told me of BPI Premium Bond. I am not sure on its details though?  :watchuthink:

What is money market funds? :D

^magbasa-basa ka sa may mutual funds/UITF corner ng PMT before investing in bond funds (like BPI premium bond fund) or money market funds

I put mine in BDO Money Market, it's currently earning a little more than SDA, but can be withdrawn anytime

BDO Money Market's rate is currently 2.8% more or less. A little more than SDA that's 2%, time deposit 1% or less. There is no holding period, u can withdraw anytime, kahit days lang...

I have mine in BPI's Short Term fund.
I can invest and redeem online and get the proceeds
the next day so its very liquid and its rate is also around 2.5+ p.a.

If you're not as rich as gang13, then you'll
also find its 10k initial/maintaining and 1k subsequent investment
requirement advantageous. Kasi 100k ata ang investment requirement
sa Money Market fund ng BDO right? :D

@gang13 - that's great pero mxherr5's quite right. haha i can't afford the initial deposit of 100k for now. i am quite new the working industry so medyo mababa pa lang ang afford. thanks for sharing it though. chineck ko rin ung site and its 100k nga  :watchuthink:

@mxherr5's - what's the difference of BPI's Short Term fund to BPI's Premium Bond ? I tried looking into BPI's website pero medyo di ko pa rin magets. haha  :hihi:

what's the difference of BPI's Short Term fund to BPI's Premium Bond ?

The BPI Short Term Fund invests mostly in short-term (one year or less) fixed-income instruments.  These include SDAs and time deposits.

The BPI Premium Bond Fund, on the other hand, focuses more on medium-term (3-5 years) fixed-income instruments.  These are mostly treasury notes and the occasional treasury bond.

This means that the BSTF will have lower effective interest rates (since the term is so short) than that of the BPBF.  I think the effective interest rate of the BSTF is roughly half that of the BPBF.

On the plus side, the BSTF is not as volatile as the BPBF.  Changes to BSP interest rates will not affect it as much.  You can more or less expect slow but steady growth using the BSTF, while the BPBF may go down in price every now and then.

If you are looking for money market funds, I agree with gang13.  BDO offers much better rates.  Metrobank's recent performance is also slightly better than that of BPI.

I hope that helps.

@adamsmithy thanks for the very comprehensive comparison of the two.  :thankyou:

One more question, when you open an account to any of the two, do they give you a table like
1 year  - 2%
2 years - 2.5%
5 years - 5%
which guarantees the return of your investment? or is it like based on luck lang din? like if their performance is good then you'll get higher  :watchuthink:

@greengecko (and anyone else with similar questions):

Like any other mutual fund / UITF, the returns of the BPI Short Term Fund and the BPI Premium Bond Fund are NOT guaranteed.  The same is true for similar funds offered by any other bank.

This means that you will not necessarily get a higher interest rate the longer you leave your money in the fund.  The effective interest rates fluctuate depending on what the fund manager decides to invest in, as well as the decisions made by the BSP on interest rates and money policies.

Time deposits and SDAs, on the other hand, offer fixed interest rates, and guarantee your deposit to some extent.  Also, the longer the term of the deposit, the higher the rate of interest offered by the bank.

The main appeal of money market funds is that the effective interest rate you get is usually higher than that of time deposits or SDAs.  These funds are also safer than bond funds or equity funds because they are far less volatile, and your money can be easily withdrawn -- one or two banking days is the norm.

The bottom line:

-  Time deposits and SDAs have fixed interest rates and guarantee the safety of your money (to some extent).  However, they offer relatively lower interest rates, and pre-terminating your deposit may incur penalties.

-  Money market accounts offer potentially higher returns, and can be withdrawn any time (some funds require a minimum holding period of 30-45 days to avoid penalties).  However, their returns are NOT guaranteed, and there is a risk -- a rather small one, depending on the actions of the fund manager and the BSP -- that your investment may go down in value from time to time.

I hope that helps you in reaching a decision on where to place your emergency funds.

@adamsmithy well explained! :applause: thanks man!  :cool2: you sound so pro sir! pero if you were in my case, where will you put you're emergency fund? :watchuthink:

Pero I'll still check the performance of each bank (safe ones) per month/year on how they're doing in terms of investment  :D
