Being a vegetarian for over 10 years, I now need to lose some of the weight i've put on in this time. Unfortunatly I must be eating an unblalance diet as i see plenty diets but most are for meat eaters none for us veggies. Any ideas for a good healthy Vegitarian weight loss program ?

I used to have problems with losing weight. Not until 2 months ago when I decided to cut off my rice intake to 99%. I mean I am eating just maybe 1 tablespoon of rice in a day.

I am not a vegetarian but I totally changed my food intake to using vegetables as my rice substitute and eating the food on the table except fatty foods.

From 215 lbs last January 20, 2010, I am down to 190 lbs and my waist line from 41 to 37 inches.

I dont eat snacks na in between meals, drink a lot of water, and stay away from junk foods.

Next week I will start with my exercise regimen and hopefully I can lose some more weight and bring out those muscles.

Like any weight loss or diet plan, the best vegetarian weight loss diet is a balanced eating plan. Because losing weight is easiest when your body is healthy and well nourished. If you're trying to lose weight, you'll want to avoid high-fat casseroles and fried veggies whenever possible. Well according to my point of view, I think that vegetarian diet includes,  boiled, broiled, grilled, steamed or sauteed vegetables.

I think you should try weight loss supplements. There is no difference if you're a vegetarian or meat eater.

If I may. . .

The question I believe is for Vegetarians. Am I to construe that you are a Vegan (pure veggies and fruits, no animal source whatsoever)vegetarian po? and not a Pesco (could eat fish) vegetarian or an OvoLacto (could eat eggs and dairy) Vegetarian?

If you are a pure vegan po, just sticking to your chosen diet of pure plants is in itself an aesthetic diet already (pampapayat). The main concern actually when it comes to vegan diets is their common errors of not taking in all of the protein that they need.

It is a known fact that there are several essential amino acids (22 to be exact, according to most studies) and essential amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. which in your case is ever so valuable since muscle is also made up primarily from protein sources as well and it is your muscle mass that determines how easy it is for you to burn calories. . .

Well, meat, for the most part are what we call as complete proteins, meaning e piece of meat contains all essential amino acids. (shempre gawa sha sa laman eh) but plant sources on the other hand are incomplete proteins, meaning they usually have only 10-14 kinds of essential amino acids, so kahit marami ang kainin mo, kulang sa variations.

The trick is to know how to mix and match. usually, if you eat green leafy veggies or fruits and you combine them with grains or legumes, you are able to complete all essential amino acids. So the rule of thumb is - eat meat - complete essential amino acids. eat veggies - a single type could contain only a few types, but what it misses may be found in other plant sources that miss what your first one has. so eat varieties of plant-sourced food items like veggies, fruits, legumes and beans (including tofu) and grains.

Please check the site of the University in the US built by seventh-day Adventists. - They would be of tremendous help to you. They popularized being vegan and have made leaps and bounds to make the lifestyle healthy and sustainable. good luck :)  :hello:

I know that what I'm going to say, you may blow off, but I highly suggest you looking into it. I'm sure, positive, it will help you two out! :) I lost a lot of weight following the raw food diet, and I liked it so much I decided to keep following the raw food diet, as a lifestyle! There are countless of examples online of success stories of raw fooders! And those that say it's unhealthy, obviously haven't looked into the whole diet. It's extremely healthy, nourishing, good for your entire body-- inside and out-- extremely low in fat, high in carbs, but the good ones. :) It's fantastic. You'll never be bored. You can literally eat as much of it as you want and still lose weight! It's also very spiritually enlighting. You'll find yourself with increased energy, and you'll feel a bit superior which is normal in the beginning. You'll realize how eating cooked food is eating dead food. Cooking food kills all the enzymes. You're left with well tasting dead food that does absoloutely nothing in your body but pile up and causes disease and layers of fat that you'll 'diet' hoping to lose, and eventually fall into the yo-yo trap.

I wish you tons of luck on your weight loss journey, and I hope you try the raw food lifestyle. There are many books that suggest trying at least 3 weeks of this way of life. Just 3 weeks! I personally have met men, and women, who've lost over 20 lbs in only one month following the raw food diet, which can also be called the 'Detox' diet. :) You'll discover how great food really is, but the good kind.

Please, just try!

Best of wishes!

@ Kristine - on the contrary, your suggestion really has a sound scientific basis. In fact, almost all Vegans I know rather like eating their food raw.

In fact, the Japanese have posted the highest average lifespan because of their preference for variety and freshness in food. The only downside to the diet you are proposing is the chance for exposure to pathogenic microorganisms in food that is not prepared properly.

food is cooked not just to make it palatable, but also to kill germs that washing otherwise would not be able to do. the Japanese for example has some of the highest incidences of Gastroenteritis and Peptic Ulcer Disease because their diet makes them prone to Helicobacter Pylori, one of the major causes of these disease processes.

IMHO however, the benefits far outweigh the cons of the diet, provided that food is prepared aseptically.

Expect to eat a lot without getting fat. you get hungry often too, and you would be consuming rather greater amounts of food so the budget could be somewhat hit also.

Nice Input Kristine :)
