JG Summit Holdings Primed To Move Higher?

JG Summit Holdings or JGS in the Philippine Stock Exchange for a while had moved past its previous high at PHP 27.50. However, sellers are quick to bring it back towards PHP 27.00. Nonetheless, things still look rosy for JGS at least from a technical perspective at this point in time...

JG Summit grows income by a third on Digitel sale

JG SUMMIT Holdings, Inc. grew its net income last year by roughly a third to a record P21.59 billion as gains from a telco divestment offset the steep decline in operating profits.

The conglomerate posted a 32% growth from 2010’s P16.32 billion but this rise was slower than the 91% profit hike seen previously.

“Net profits from continuing operations, plus profits arising from the sale of [JG Summit’s] stake in telecommunications business Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc. (Digitel) to Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), all contributed to the record earnings,” JG Summit said.

Regulators approved the PLDT and Digitel merger in October last year, giving PLDT, the dominant telco 70% of the market, and leaving Ayala-led Globe Telecom, Inc. with 30%.

Mediaquest Holdings, Inc., a subsidiary PLDT’s Beneficial Trust Fund, has a minority stake in BusinessWorld.

Profits from the said sale contributed P13 billion to the company’s profits, while profits from continued operations went down by 45% to P15.57 billion from P8.56 billion year on year due to a surge in input costs, foreign exchange movements, and the volatility in capital markets, JG Summit said.

Excluding taxes and the gains from Digitel’s sale, JG Summit’s core income declined by 9% to P16.27 billion, while consolidated revenues rose 17% to P122.90 billion.

Universal Robina Corp., the company’s food and beverage arm, saw a 41% decline in its net income to P4.64 billion on the back of high commodity costs.

JG Summit Petrochemical Corp., the holding firm’s unlisted petroleum firm, posted a higher net loss of P384 million versus the P102 million in 2010 due to higher production volume, inventory write-offs, and higher bunker fuel prices.

Its property unit Robinsons Land Corp. hiked its 2011 net income by 11% to P3.97 billion due to the strong performance mostly from the firm’s commercial and residential divisions.

Robinsons Bank Corp., for its part, recorded a 23.3% increase in its net income to P368 million due to higher interest income and trading gains.

Meanwhile, Cebu Air, Inc.’s consolidated net income plunged by 47.6% to P3.624 billion last year versus P6.922 billion in the previous year.

“Fuel cost, which constitute about 50% of consolidated operating expenses, grew by 55.2% to P15.221 billion from P9.808 billion in the previous year,” Cebu Air noted.

Share prices of JG Summit fell by 3.31% to P26.55 apiece yesterday at the close of trading. -- Franz Jonathan G. de la Fuente with CHCV

Recommendation: Hold

A TRADER at First Metro Securities Brokerage Corp. has advised investors to keep shares in JG Summit Holdings, Inc. (JGS) on hold, saying the price is at its peak.

“The price-to-earnings ratio is 14.51 times, even higher than the five-year average of 10.13 times,” said Ghia Paula L. Yuson of the brokerage firm.

The stock closed at P27.65 apiece last week, up by 3.36% from Thursday’s P26.75. It was the highest closing price recorded since early February.

But the price could still rise in the next few days. “Fundamental-wise, there looks like a very limited upside. But the technicals point to two upsides in the short term,” said the trader.

Ms. Yuson placed the stock’s support at P26.65 and resistance at P28.60.

Last week, JG Summit Holdings, Inc. reported a 32% growth in net income to P21.59 billion in 2011 from 2010’s P16.32 billion, which was due to gains from the sale of its stake in Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc. to Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. — M. J. O. Cantilero

JG Summit to ramp up spending this year for expansions

LISTED CONGLOMERATE JG Summit Holdings, Inc. is ramping up capital spending this year in line with expansion plans in place for its real estate and aviation units, an official said.

The Gokongwei-led firm has pegged capital expenditure at P52.87 billion for 2012, up 79.89% from the P29.39 billion spent in 2011, Bach Johann M. Sebastian, JG Summit senior vice-president and corporate planning head, told BusinessWorld in an e-mail.

A bulk of JG Summit’s will be accounted for by the company’s real estate arm Robinsons Land Corp. and low-cost airline operator Cebu Air, Inc., Mr. Sebastian said.

Robinsons Land will be spending P19.25 billion this year, a 73.74% increase from the P11.08 billion spent last year, the e-mailed data showed.

Robinsons Land, which hiked its full-year net profits by 10% to P3.97 billion last year, earlier said it will be sourcing its capex from cash operations and debt, with more than 60% of the funding going to malls, office buildings, and hotels, and the remainder for condominiums and other housing units.

Cebu Air, for its part, nearly tripled its budget to P12.50 billion this year versus only P4.22 billion last year.

“Funding for Cebu Air will contribute to the growth of its fleet acquisitions this year,” Mr. Sebastian said in a separate telephone interview.

Cebu Air, which operates budget carrier Cebu Pacific, aims to expand its fleet to 47 aircraft by the end of 2014 in line with plans to embark on long-haul flights within the year.

Other JG Summit units, particularly its unlisted petroleum and banking firms, will also ramp up spending this year.

JG Summit Petrochemical Corp., the unlisted petroleum subsidiary of JG Summit, has pegged its 2012 budget at P15.54 billion, up by 88.82% from P8.23 billion in 2011.

JG Summit Petrochemical aims to open the country’s first naphtha cracker raw material factory in Batangas City in the third quarter next year, in a bid to drive down raw material production costs according to earlier reports.

Robinsons Bank Corp., for its part, will be spending P390 million this year, more than double the P190 million figure earmarked in 2011.

Listed food and beverage firm Universal Robina Corp. will be spending P4.56 billion this year, unchanged from its last year’s capex.

JG Summit, established in 1990, is the Gokongwei family’s holding company for various interests. JG Summit shares were traded unchanged on Friday at P28 apiece. -- Franz Jonathan G. de la Fuente

Research group upbeat on JG Summit

MANILA, Philippines—JG Summit Holdings, the conglomerate led by John Gokongwei, is seen back in the limelight as a beneficiary of the Philippines’ strong consumption story and budding gaming and tourism sectors, research powerhouse CLSA Asia-Pacific said.

In a report dated April 12 written by analyst Jaqui Evangelista, CLSA initiated coverage of JGS with a “buy” recommendation and a 12-month target price of P43 per share based on a discounted net asset valuation.  This report boosted JGS’ share price to new highs in the stock market in the last few days.

On Friday, JGS closed at P33.50 (up 7.2 percent), giving it a market capitalization of P212.4 billion.

The report said JGS’ growth for 2012 and 2013 would largely be attributable to the continued strong performance of food unit Universal Robina Corp., property unit Robinsons Land Corp. and airline operator Cebu Air.

CLSA expects JGS’ core earnings per share to double to P2.02 this year and P3.09 next year from P1.03 in 2011.

JG Summit has been thrust back into the spotlight after the successful sale of Digital Telecommunications in October 2011 in exchange for a stake in Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., the report said.

“Armed with a fortified balance sheet and with its focus shifted back to its core subs URC, Robinsons Land and Cebu Air, we turn bullish on JG Summit’s growth prospects in the Philippines and abroad, as well as its planned PPP [public-private partnership]) participation,” the report said.

The report said that challenging market incumbents and operational efficiency were the seals of the JGS group.

“From Gokongwei’s roots as a trader in the 1950s, JG Summit expanded into the snack foods, property, telecom and air-transport sectors, buoyed by the market’s increasing demand for more options. This opportunistic business principle has enabled JG Summit to be the giant that it is today, extending its service market beyond the Philippines to its Asean [Association of Southeast Asian] neighbors,” it said.

Armed with an investment capacity of P184 billion, CLSA noted that JG Summit was the newest PPP player that would pursue four airport projects in this year’s PPP pipeline.—Doris C. Dumlao

Recommendation: Cautious buy

REGINA Capital Development Corp. has advised investors to include JG Summit Holdings, Inc. shares in their portfolios, pointing to expected gains from its Batangas naptha cracker plant that is expected to be completed late next year.

“JGS is fundamentally good. Additionally, the prospects of its petrochemical unit make the stock attractive,” said analyst Claire S. Quiray.

The Gokongwei-led holding company is looking to book up to $1 billion in annual revenues from the petrochemical venture.

Technical indicators show JGS is trading sideways. “The stock still has an upside potential, but it is still accumulating momentum. It has to break out from P36.30 per share — the stock’s resistance, before we can target P40 per share,” Ms. Quiray said. JGS shares closed at P34.90 apiece last Friday, up from Thursday’s P34.80 a piece.

Ms. Quiray pegged the stock’s support at P32.70 apiece and price-to-earnings ratio at 10.70 times, lower than the market’s 18 times. — Carmina Angelica C. Valeroso

JG Summit declares dividends
Posted on June 29, 2012 06:18:32 PM

GOKONGWEI-LED JG Summit Holdings, Inc. has moved to distribute cash dividends to its stockholders by August, a disclosure to the local bourse showed on Friday.
"The board of directors of JG Summit approved on June 28 the declaration of a cash dividend in the amount of 16 centavos per common share from the unrestricted retained earnings of the corporation..." the disclosure read.

The cash dividend will be payable on Aug. 13 to all stockholders of record as of July 18, JG Summit added.

JG Summit saw its net income for January to March surge by 76.62% to P4.91 billion from last year's P2.78 billion

Revenues, mostly from the company's food and air transportation businesses, climbed by 13.84% to P33.48 billion, while cost of sales and services rose by 16.98% to P23.77 billion versus P20.32 billion, year on year.

The holding firm will be spending P52.87 billion in capital expenditures this year--up nearly 80% from last year's budget of P29.39 billion--in line with higher expenditure plans for nearly all its core businesses.

JG Summit shares rose by 0.29% to P34.90 from P34.80 at its previous close.

For JGS there was a sell off. Price going down with relatively big volume and it happen to break the support around 32.18 Fibonacci retracement level. The price level today is the same as that of July 18 so it might rebound. From July 18 to this date actually I consider it doing sideways or in consolidation mode. If it will fall below the rectangle pattern then it might not be good for holders. Caveat!

Since August 6 JGS is pretty much doing well from around 32 per share to above 34. But today's candlestick reminds us to be careful. Today's candlestick looks like a Hanging Man.

The hanging man is a bearish reversal pattern. Since it is seen at the top of the uptrend, a Bearish Hanging Man Pattern signals that selling pressure is starting to increase. The low of the long lower shadow indicates that the sellers pushed prices lower during the day. Even though the bulls regained their footing and drove prices higher at the closing, the appearance of this selling pressure after a rally should not be taken lightly.

Selling pressure on JGS?

Impressive recovery for JGS after it went down with a gap last 25th of September (Selling pressure on JGS?) when we saw a Hanging Man. October 2 when it made a strong rally smashing the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level (resistance) and since then the bulls has taken charge until gap was closed.

Closed at 34.55/share, will 35.25 be a strong resistance? Once it pass that level the only major resistance is 36 - 36.20 range. With no warning from the candlesticks, I think bullish sentiment is still intact for this stock. If you want to ride, monitor the price around 10-11 in the morning.

By the way it has a buy signal on MACD. Caveat!

JGS - Just Going Strong

Possible pull back for JGS as it shows a reversal signal by way of the Long legged Doji near the middle band of Bollinger Band. JGS is in a downtrend for a few days now after the Hanging Man cue last week. Is it time to reverse for possible run to all time high? As a medium reliability candlestick pattern, Long legged Doji, when seen at the bottom of the trend could mean reversal but needs a confirmation by way of a gap up or a long green candlestick.

Possible pullback?

JGS went up today and it looks like its not yet done going up. White Marubozu confirms its bullishness and may soon test the resistance at around 40. RSI pointing upwards and still in a very healthy state.

A bullish JGS
