A Yoda stamp, this is

October 26, 2007

Yay! Our syntax-mangling but cute and wise Star Wars character, Yoda, is now featured on a stamp released by the US Postal Service (USPS).

The USPS conducted an online voting in March this year to vote which of the 15 images on the Star Wars stamp sheet would be publicly released. More than half a million votes were cast and the Jedi Master trumped other characters in the Star Wars series.

A Yoda stamp, this is.

The Yoda stamp is part of the USPS’s participation in the Star Wars 30th anniversary event, which celebrates the release of the original movie.

Surely, a great collector’s item, this is.

Q&A blooper: Ms. South Carolina Teen USA 2007

September 3, 2007

Pop quiz, hotshot.

Why do you think more than 20% of Americans find it difficult to locate their country on a world map?

It’s a relatively easy question to answer, but if you don’t have much time to think and if you’re in front of thousands of people competing in a beauty pageant such as Miss Teen USA, you probably would fumble.

That’s exactly what happened to Lauren Caitlin Upton, reigning “Miss South Carolina Teen USA,” when she was asked the question during last week’s Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant.

The question: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the US on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Her now-oh-so-popular reply:

The ‘penis’ lamp sticks out

August 25, 2007

stick out.

Phrasal verb.

  • 1. To be obvious or noticeable; to stand out.
  • 2. To project or protrude.

- Source: AllWords.com

Spotted today at a store in Market! Market! mall at The Fort: a lamp that truly sticks out (see Definition 1).

There's something in this lamp that makes it stick out.

Who's buying this lamp?

What’s not to like at the Taste Asia 2 Bloggers’ Party?

August 25, 2007

The perfect opportunity to network with other Filipino bloggers, lots of prizes and giveaways, and of course, free food! What’s not to like at the Taste Asia 2 Bloggers’ Party?

Hundreds (was it 300 or 400?) flocked yesterday night to Taste Asia, beside SM Hypermarket at the Mall of Asia to eat, drink, and be merry with fellow Pinoy bloggers. SM Hypermarket treated the bloggers to lots — yes, a lot! — of free food and drinks (the cost, of course, was not an issue because SM’s going to recoup it in the form of link love to their site and invaluable word-of-mouth publicity, just like this article!).

Anyway, it’s my turn to spread the link love to the people I met at the party (in the same order I met them): Mimi and Karl of CliqueBooth and Peyups.com (mga bossing, nice to have finally met you!), Jedi, Ronnel, Marghil, Jun, Tom, Karl, Jehzeel, Kirby, Allen, Noemi, Jhay, Dax, Ederic, Jayvee, Jozzua, Aileen, Eugene and Marc.

If ever I missed anyone, sorry! Just post a comment and I’ll send my link love.

Philippine prisoners’ jail dance now an internet phenomenon

August 4, 2007

Filipino prisoners in the island of Cebu are bringing down the house, err, the jail house.

Some 1,600 inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) are now becoming a worldwide phenomenon after their dance routines featured prominently in the video sharing site, YouTube, and in other media companies such as BBC and Yahoo News.

The dancing, held twice daily in jail, was the brainchild of special security consultant Byron Garcia who also put the videos on YouTube.

He said they began the dancing routines last year after he noticed that very few of the prisoners were taking part in the calisthenics and push-ups that the jail was offering for their exercise.

Millions of YouTube users around the world have watched the prisoners dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Queen’s “Radio Gaga,” music from the hit move “Sister Act,” Village People’s “YMCA” and “In the Navy,” and Pink Floyd’s “the Wall.”

(With pics) Secret images ‘discovered’ in da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”

July 28, 2007

Sounding like something straight out of Dan Brown's fictional best-seller, The Da Vinci Code, an Italian computer analyst claims to have discovered secret images inside Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, "The Last Supper."

Pesci Slavisa said the image can only be seen in a certain light and that he had to use his computer skills to reveal it.

He claims to have discovered the "hidden" images by superimposing a reverse image on the original image.

‘YouTube mySpace and I’ll Google your Yahoo’

May 9, 2007

Saw a cool shirt at Robinson’s Place Manila today. This one’s selling for a measly P179.75 (US$3.75).

The shirt proclaims:

YouTube mySpace and I'll Google your Yahoo

No need to read between the lines. LOL.

PS. We are neither related to nor affiliated with the makers of the shirt or Robinson’s Malls.

Falling in love with Moscow

April 15, 2007

No, Pinoy Money Talk is not turning into a travel blog (well, not yet) but here are some pictures and a video of my recent trip to Russia and Ukraine which explains why this blog went into a one-week no-post hiatus last week.

I first visited Moscow, Russia in August 2006 and fell in love with the city right there and then. The sights and sounds were astoundingly different from what the Philippines, Korea, Singapore or the US have to offer, and the story behind each building, street or monument make Moscow more enchanting.
