DLSU talk on ‘Alternative Investment and Earning Opportunities’
June 25, 2007
I recently got invited to deliver a talk on any special topic in Finance by a finance-oriented student organization of De La Salle University. On June 22, Friday, I headed to the DLSU campus in Manila and addressed a group of 30-40 students on the topic of "Alternative Investment and Earning Opportunities."
My speech primarily focused on investment and earning opportunities which most Filipinos are not aware of or do not know about. I tackled Mutual Fund and Unit Investment Trust Fund (UITF) investing which, although not really considered "alternative," are still a new investment concept to most Filipinos.
I also discussed how to profit from Real Estate Investing, particularly through the method that is now gaining popularity among property investors: Foreclosed Property Investing. This strategy was new to the audience (mostly third year Finance majors), but a lot of them got interested in how it is being done and how it is possible to start with little money but at a faster payback period.
The interesting part of the lecture was the discussion of Online Earning Opportunities. I showed students screenshots of my earnings in High-Yield Investment Programs (HYIPs) that I previously invested in. At the same time, however, I issued a warning that these programs should be treated as a high-risk gamble where, although returns are amazingly high, loss is inevitably a possibility.
I also introduced other "more genuine" online opportunities, such as Paid Blogging, Google Adsense, Website Links Selling and paid online surveys, among others.
I personally hope I was able to impart something of value to the participants. I sincerely thank the Management of Financial Institutions Association (MaFIA), the organization that spearheaded the talk, Department Chair Dr. Neriza Delfino and the Finance students who listened to my presentation.
