Tips to Pass the Nursing Board Exam

Do you want some tips to help you pass the Licensure Exam for Nurses?

Without a doubt, passing the Board Exam requires tons of preparation, hard work, persistence, and determination. You will surely do your part. You will study long hours, read a lot of books, and answer hundreds of pages of reviewers.

But for you to pass with above-average scores or to even become a topnotcher, you probably would want to hear useful tips straight from those who already aced the NLE?

Don’t worry, we compiled for you below the best insights and tips that we got from Nursing Exam passers and topnotchers! it’s your turn to pass the NLE this time! Good luck!

Tip #1: Don’t doubt yourself.

Beverly Anne Balagon, topnotcher of the June 2013 NLE, has this to say as her secret to topping the Nursing Exam: “The profile of a topnotcher is one who never doubts. Identify where your doubts come from and try to remove them.”

You’ve already spent countless number of hours to review for the NLE and, on top of that, you were able to finish your course, so you’re likely just one step closer from being a full-fledged Registered Nurse (RN). Never doubt that you’ll make it. Just keep pushing yourself to reach the finish line.

Tip #2: Make sure you love the profession.

Dean Susan Maravilla of the UST College of Medicine offers this piece of advice to those aspiring to become RNs: “For you to be happy as a nurse, you should have decided to take the NLE because you actually want to become a nurse and to take care of people. You will not be happy if your only intention is, say, to go abroad or to make a lot of money.”

Nursing Board 2014 topnotcher Margaret Sanchez shares the same thought. She wanted to become a nurse because “I really want to serve Filipinos. Masarap po ang pagtanggap ng mga tao dito sa Pilipinas kaya iba talaga ang feeling kapag ang pinagsisilbihan mo ay ang sarili mong mga kababayan.”

So find out the real reason why you want to become a nurse and use it as your inspiration and fuel to pass the Nursing exam.

Tip #3: Overcome test anxiety.

Do you find yourself horribly worried or panicking about the thought of failing the NLE? Or perhaps experienced difficulty retaining information while reviewing or experienced rapid heartbeat and nervousness in the days leading to the exam?

You are not alone. This feeling is normal. This is called “test anxiety” — a psychological condition wherein people experience extreme stress, distress, and anxiety when faced with a situation of taking an exam. So how do you overcome “test anxiety”?

Firstly, prepare ahead of time. Allot at least three (3) months for your review. You may choose to enroll in a review center to speed up the accumulation of knowledge or join group review sessions so you can mingle with other examinees who share the experience. Divide and manage the number of hours per day that you’ll allot to reading books, taking notes, and answering sample exams or review materials. Discipline yourself to follow this routine. Also, two or three days before the exam, make sure you’ve prepared everything that you’ll need to bring to the exam venue. Of course, make sure you know where the exact venue is and how to get there. Better if you can simulate going to the exam venue from your house two or three days before the exam. By completing these preparations, you’ll feel more confident to take the NLE and you’ll be able to reduce your worries.

Also, find time to rest and relax. The daily grind of NLE review will certainly be taxing and exhausting. Understand that your body cannot function normally  if you overdo everything. Decide when to take a break — for example, to watch a movie, to have a walk in the park, or to play computer games as a form of relaxation — to rejuvenate and revitalize yourself. Just make sure you stick to your review schedule and you do not get sucked into relaxation mode all the time.

Tip #4: Don’t just memorize concepts.

Look at the number of books you have to read for the review. You should know by now that you will be unable to memorize all concepts in each page of the book. Which is why memorizing information rarely works and cannot help you pass the NLE. You must understand the information. You must use critical thinking and, sometimes, common sense when answering a situational question.

Some of the questions in the exam are hypothetical situations that you will soon be faced with once you become a Registered Nurse. What will you be doing in that actual scenario? Visualize the scenario and answer the option that best describes the action you will take in that particular scenario. That is likely the correct answer to the question.

Tip #5: Understand what the test question is really asking.

Some examinees fail the Nursing exam because they don’t actually understand the question being asked. If you find yourself being lost in what’s being asked, reword the question and rephrase it in your own way. Don’t attempt to ask proctors for clarification because: (1) they weren’t the ones who made the exam so they likely have no idea what’s being asked in the question; and (2) you will waste precious seconds or minutes just to talk to the proctor which should be spent answering other items.

Look for clues in the question. For example, if you were asked “What is your first priority when dealing with a patient scheduled for percutaneous coronary intervention?” you probably would panic if you have no idea what “percutaneous coronary intervention” is. So break down the question and look for context clues. You’re being asked what your priority action is — so something you should do immediately — assuming you are dealing with a patient scheduled for percutaneous coronary intervention.

But what is percutaneous? If you don’t know what it is, try to remember concepts related to this word. You probably have heard of percutaneous catheter, which is administered by directly puncturing the skin surface. So percutaneous is likely related to “skin”. And “coronary”? Definitely the heart. So the question is likely asking about something that’s under the skin that you do for the heart. Now you can take an educated guess given that rewording of the question.

PRC Room Assignments: NLE Nursing Exam (Nov 2019)

If you see a “Now Available!” note beside the exam venue, it means the PRC already released the list for that province or city and you may now view the room assignment. If it is not yet available, the PRC is still finalizing the school and classroom details. We will update this post once the official Room Assignments are released.

Here are additional useful tips we suggest you follow before the exam.

1. You’ll notice that even in just one school, several buildings and classrooms will be used as testing centers. To make sure that you proceed to the correct location, write down and take note of the exact Building, Classroom, and Seat Number assigned to you.

2. Before the day of the board exam, find out the address of the school or venue where you’ll be taking the exam. Research the actual location using Google Maps or a guide map to determine how to get there.

3. Better yet, try visiting the venue a few days before the board exam! Doing so will help you discover the best transportation or routes to take. If you simulate going to the venue beforehand, you’ll also have an idea how long it will take you to reach the exam center from your place. This allows you to change your transportation plans, if needed.

4. On the day of the exam, don’t be late! According to the PRC, examinees who will be late will NOT BE ALLOWED to take the board exam. We suggest you arrive at the exam venue at least one (1) hour before the start of the exam. This gives you enough time to locate the building, classroom, and seat number assigned to you.

What happens if you did not show up or weren’t able to take the boards? The answer is in this article: I registered but I did not take the board exam.
