Tips to Pass the Dentist Licensure Exam

Do you want some tips to help you pass the Dentist exam?

Without a doubt, passing the Licensure Exam for Dentists requires tons of preparation, hard work, persistence, and determination. You will surely do your part. You will study long hours, read a lot of books, and answer hundreds of pages of reviewers.

But do you want to hear useful tips, this time straight from those who already passed the boards? Here’s our collection of the best insights and tips from previous Dentist Licensure Exam passers themselves!

Tip #1: Be careful of various types of exam questions.

Some questions in the board exam may appear like they’re there to trick the examinee but in reality, these questions are testing the depth of a prospective dentist’s knowledge and understanding of the profession. Watch out for the following types of questions so you won’tbe tripped when you encounter them in the exam.

  • The “Exception” question – These are questions containing the phrase “all of the above, except…”, “… is NOT an example of…”, or “none of the above”. Thoroughly read and understand what’s being asked and make sure you do not miss what’s being excluded or included in the question.
  • The “Superlatives” question –  These are questions or answers containing “always,” “every,” “all,” or “none”. Don’t be fooled by these answers because in most cases, these statements are false. Why? Because — you know this by now — there are rarely absolutes in human anatomy and science. So if you see those superlatives phrases in the questions or answers, think twice about what’s actually being asked.
  • The “Usually” question – These are questions containing the words “usually,” “likely,” “may,” “possibly,” or “generally”. As opposed to the superlatives described above which are generally false, do note that the use of these phrases usually indicate this time that the statement is true.

Tip #2: If there are opposite answers, one of them is likely the correct answer.

If you are given two options in the multiple choice questions that are complete opposite of one another, one of them is likely the correct answer. This is a very nifty tip for those taking the licensure exam since it already increases your chances of getting the wrong answer because you’e already eliminated the other 50% of the options.

Sample question: “Which of the following situations would result in dark radiographs?”

a. Films were beyond the expiration date

b. Developing solution was too cold

c. Exposure time was too short

d. Exposure time was too long

You’ll notice that Options C and D are complete opposite of each other, which means the correct answer is likely one of them. You can already eliminate Options A and B, which means your chance of getting this right now increases to 50%.

So what’s the answer to the question above? It’s actually “D. Exposure time was too long.”

Tip #3: The long answers are usually the right answers.

When answering the exam questions, do not overthink. Do not attempt to go to the proctor to clarify questions or answers, since they’re not the ones that made the exam anyway. It’s possible that you can find an argument why Answer A, B, or C is the best answer, but do not complicate things and just go for the black-and-white answer. The simplest tip, if you’re really unsure of what to answer: go for the statement that is the longest among the options. It’s been tried and tested before that long answers are usually the right answers.

Tip #4: Do not anymore cram 24 hours before the exam.

Guess what, no amount of cramming and studying can effectively be done one day  prior to the exam. This has already been proven by several examinees who will tell you that it will only cause you unnecessary anxiety and stress because you’ll get to see that perhaps there were still a lot of topics that you skipped or missed. If you want, you can allot 1-3 hours hours to briefly review a day before the examination — to just browse through tables or memorize concepts that you want retained — and that’s all.

Take time to relax, have fun, or go for a run, and make sure you go to bed early. Wake up around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning, eat a decent breakfast, and bring all required documents then proceed to the exam venue. Reduce your stress level a day prior and on the day of the exam.

Tip #5: Take care of yourself.

Weeks leading to the exam, make sure you regularly eat plenty of nutritious food, get ample amount of sleep every night, and periodically unwind. Your health is important and being sick on the day of the exam is the worst situation you’ll be in.

Also, be sure to plan something relaxing and fun after completing the dentist exam. You’ve worked really hard, no doubt, and you deserve a break. Celebrate! There’s nothing you can do anymore but to wait for the results, so have fun and look forward to your happy future as a dentist!

PRC Room Assignments: Dentist Exam (Dec 2019)

If you see a “Now Available!” note beside the exam venue, it means the PRC already released the list for that province or city and you may now view the room assignment. If it is not yet available, the PRC is still finalizing the school and classroom details. We will update this post once the official Room Assignments are released.

Here are additional useful tips we suggest you follow before the exam.

1. You’ll notice that even in just one school, several buildings and classrooms will be used as testing centers. To make sure that you proceed to the correct location, write down and take note of the exact Building, Classroom, and Seat Number assigned to you.

2. Before the day of the board exam, find out the address of the school or venue where you’ll be taking the exam. Research the actual location using Google Maps or a guide map to determine how to get there.

3. Better yet, try visiting the venue a few days before the board exam! Doing so will help you discover the best transportation or routes to take. If you simulate going to the venue beforehand, you’ll also have an idea how long it will take you to reach the exam center from your place. This allows you to change your transportation plans, if needed.

4. On the day of the exam, don’t be late! According to the PRC, examinees who will be late will NOT BE ALLOWED to take the board exam. We suggest you arrive at the exam venue at least one (1) hour before the start of the exam. This gives you enough time to locate the building, classroom, and seat number assigned to you.

What happens if you did not show up or weren’t able to take the boards? The answer is in this article: I registered but I did not take the board exam.
