The Philippines’ Top Blogs of 2008

James Ryan Jonas

The year 2008 was a turbulent year not just for the Philippine stock market but for the Philippine blogosphere as well. For one, several bloggers were directly involved in a variety of issues, both good and bad. Last year also saw the rise of a lot of up-and-coming bloggers but, at the same time, a few previously popular bloggers simply stopped writing or just faded into oblivion.

In this article, we recognize Filipino blogs which made a huge jump in their Alexa rankings from the time we started monitoring blogs during the 1st quarter of 2008. A jump in the ranking most likely means the blog is getting more popular, translating to more visitors and perhaps more online income.

We also present here the quarterly change in the ranking of blogs from the 3rd quarter of 2008 to the 1st quarter of 2009.

The results below.

The Philippines’ 14 Blog Advancers in 2008
Based on the 1-year % change of Alexa rank

[Table=30]

Out of the initial 45 blogs we started tracking in April 2008, only 14 blogs managed to increase their Alexa ranks.

The biggest jumper in 2008 is Jehzlau-Concepts.com. The blog initially ranked #29 with an Alexa rank of 102,719 but in the latest tally for 1st Quarter 2009, the blog zoomed to #5, making a 62.2% jump in its Alexa rank in just one year.

Completing the Top 5 in terms of biggest Alexa rank changes are #2: 5ThirtyOne.com (56.1%); #3: Carlocab.com (48.6%); #4: TechAtHand.net (46.3%); and #5: Alleba.com/blog (46.1%).

As for the overall best ranked blogs today, find below the Top 50 Blogs as of the 1st Quarter 2009, determined based on Alexa’s 3-month traffic rank by end-March 2009.

Ranked by Alexa’s 3-month traffic rank

[Table=31]

The list is still dominated by old, known blogs. Only two new entries managed to get into the list this time (#21: NursingCrib.com and #37: MelvinBlog.com).

Two blogs which we have been tracking before but have been staying on the above-50 level finally made their way to the Top 50. These are JoanJoyce.com/blog (#34) and AboutMyRecovery.com (#48).

The 5 Biggest Gainers

Usually, a preview of who’s going to be on top is seen on who gain ranks the fastest. Here are blogs that gained the highest in terms of Alexa ranking (for the comparative 4Q ’08 and 1Q ’09 figures, refer to the table above).

The 5 Biggest Decliners

On the other hand, those with declining Alexa ranks should be concerned because new blogs may push them out of the Top 50. Here are five blogs with the highest declines in Alexa rank as of the 1st Quarter of 2009.

The Next 10 Blogs

On top of the 50 blogs seen on the list, here are some more blogs to watch out for. Sooner or later, these blogs ranked 51st to 60th may soon enter the Top 50 list.

Disclaimer

We reiterate that although the Alexa system may not be considered perfect, we are using it because it provides objective information about the apparent reach and popularity of Filipino blogs.

The Philippines’ Top Blogs List excludes blogs whose majority of posts:

  • feature nude or sexy pictures or videos of people;
  • offer free streaming or download of copyrighted music, videos, movies and other media;
  • provide links to free downloads of themes, layouts, games, software, etc.;
  • promote sex, violence, terrorism, or discrimination; or
  • are mere aggregate of other blogs and sites

Corporate blogs and subdomain blogs which cannot be separately ranked are also excluded from the list.

If you know a blog that should be included here, please contact us so we can include it in the next update.
