Just because of the recent "fake news" phenom, the old style "exaggerations" and other "news" tricks, I think we need a separate thread for media.

Media was called the 4th pillar of democracy, based on the theory that it can act as a counter balance to govt and other invested interest groups.

Well, since then it must have gone to their heads because media seems to be no different from other invested groups.

Those are the main stream media, namely: TV, Radio and print.
Now we have social media as well as other internet media.
Are they any better?

Well, the problem with social media is that it is not regulated.  If let's say GMA makes a mistake in their reporting, they need to make a public apology and take it back.  If not, they get penalized, lose credibility, and lose sponsors.

For social media, the more sensational, the more viral, the better...whether it is true or not.

But in Phils most of them are owned by the families in power   :hihi:    (or friends to them).
As for instance Rappler, who want Duterte to fail.  Rappler is ILLEGAL by it's foreign financed...

Are there ANY regulations functioning in Phils against the rich families?    I mean when they are in the side in power for the moment  :hihi:         Sure in some cases not even murder is counted as a serious crime by the court!!!  :fight1:
For social media, the more sensational, the more viral, the better...whether it is true or not.
Is that the reason you make up a lot of lies about me?    :D

Well, sa main stream, hindi naman outright errors ang tinutukoy ko.
Mas worse, ang mga subtle and suggestive languages and terms used to influence the readers and/or audience.
Pwede rin mga pictures used to invoke certain emotions.

It is true most media outfits are owned by the rich.
Kaya maski losing business, tuloy pa rin.

Sa 'under' kumikita naman...
Meron din for defense and offense purposes, whether vs political and/or business opponents

Some of the consequences apply also for social media, namely:
loss of credibility thus followers,
ads (maybe),
sponsors (absolutely albeit of a different kind).

Main stream media has more responsibility because they were granted franchises and or licenses.

However, they are much worse in the 'sin of omission'.
Example: Crane collapsed on job site of a mall under construction - mall is not named.

In this case, a reverse effect is in order, money from ad is more important than complete news report. So instead of bad reporting resulting in loss of ad revenue, incomplete reporting ensure ad revenue.

Marami din advertisements that masquerade as news.

Credibility examples (or rather, examples of deceit):
Two TV outfits claimed to be No.1 in viewership.
Narrower view used to take picture to make the crowd seems larger.

Isa pa, news readers who interject the news with side comments and other facial or verbal innuendos.

etc etc etc

For social media, I don't think it really matters.  They find ways to create curiosity in their titles for people to click their sites.  Even if it isn't the truth.  Advertisers advertise in sites that have large readerships, not because the writer is accountable for what he writes.  They pay per view, regardless of the credibility of the content.

While newspaper advertisers pay IN ADVANCE, therefore, newspapers have to be credible for people to buy them.

I think no newspaper can escape from having some opinion of everyday events.  Tao pa rin ang nagpapatakbo ng mga ito.  And so, the best is to read at least three local newspapers, then at least two foreign news outfits to see a different opinion.

Having an opinion is not a problem, only that such should stay in the OpEd section.

Gullible?
Stupid?
Careless?
Conspirator?
Real Deal?

I'm talking about PCIJ "scoop" on the Lascañas "journal", aka diary in more familiar Pinoy lingo.

Grabe ang skill of the writer ng Lascañas journal na yan.
Medyo incredible nga lang ang estorya behind it ...

Hindi kaya na over-kill nila?
Tama na sana yung press conference nya ... nabawasan tuloy ang ...

I heard a good suggestion, ask Lascañas to write a short piece while in the Senate hearing, in English din, so it may be compared to the writing style used in the "journal".
