Great investment opportunities

I want to set up a small-scale low cost joint investment fund (JIF) what
will invest in technology companies in Asia.

For several reasons there are outstanding chances in technology
companies in Asia. Let me just mention a few.

• the demographics of China show that an enormous mass of new
middle class consumers will emerge in the coming decade.

• a phenomenon called the “technology jump”. It means people who
start for the first time with a technology, will immediately use
the latest available and skip older technologies.. This means adoption
of newer technologies in trailing markets go faster than in leading markets.
E.g. hundreds of millions of Africans without fixed line phones, skipped fixed totally
and immediately moved to mobile.
In many Asian countries you see already that the adoption of (mobile) internet, goes faster
than it went in the West (and wow, how fast did it redefine markets there…)

Whats your opinion on Alibaba IPO?

Just want to see your forecast/research skills as you will be handling a relatively huge sum of money in case youll be able to pool funds from investors.

@Goodsteward
"Whats your opinion on Alibaba IPO?"

If you really want a good answer that would take pages since a conclusion without the logic behind it is quite useless.

But I will say some things about it in 5 min.

1. Your question is actually two questions in one. Alibaba itself and (buying into) the IPO.
To start with the last: buying in an IPO I never (try to) do. I say try since many times the shares are allocated to institutional investors and it is very difficult to get between that. IPO buying is an insider world. Besides that, IPO "craziness" is not my thing. I would either buy later at a higher price, but with the then certainty there is support in the market for that price level, or buy later for a lower than IPO price.

2. In general I think Alibaba is a tremendous company and Jack Ma, the Jef Bezos of China, has shown repeatedly to have vision years ahead of others.

3. The latest assessment of USD 150B IPO is not that high, if you relate it to the size of the company and it's proven success to other tech IPO's of the past years. There have been much higher multiples for much less proven tech businesses.

4. The diversification Alibaba is taking into content (movies etc) will pay of in the future. Most Chinese consumers watch video on mobile already.

5. An interesting development is their move into banking. First because banking in China is in the first steps of privatization. And second because Alibaba is of course one of the most able companies to achieve a strong presence in mobile banking there. And third because they also have another interest in it: payments on their trading platforms (wasn't that why Ebay once bought Paypal?)

6. What worries me is their juridical structure and the lack of control that gives to investors over the true assets of the company.

Both your username and question make me believe you might be in money management. True? Whats your view on Alibaba?

Sir, Are you proposing to set up a fund, as in a real mutual type fund here in RP?

It could be here or be based offshore. That depends on the wishes of the people involved.

And you meant to be the professional manager of the fund(s)?
Where do you live now, if I may ask?

Since I post my questions here, I think I should also post your answer here.

No, not until you can show your resume, experience and guarantee for any such fund. And yes, I have funds invested both in PSE and UITF.

Serious investors never want to discuss on a public board the funds they have available for investing, where they are located and the conditions on which they want to invest.
Nor will I discuss anything related to their- or my investments or circumstances in public.

all pmt investors,

just a cautious reminder, under Philippine laws, solicitation of investment by any individual, without securing a valid registration with the SEC as an investment company, is illegal.  To be able to secure a license with SEC, a minimum capital in the hundreds of millions of pesos are required from the incorporators aside from securing an endorsement with other government agencies other than SEC.

it is not easy to form an investment or mutual fund company under Philippine laws.  regulatory protection is a good pre-requisite to safeguard your hard earned savings.  There is no government mandated insurance protection against failed investments in mutual or similar funds.

I'm not asking for confidential info.
Only regular stuffs like fund manager's credentials, fund prospectus, how much fund under management, how much capital is put up by the fund managers, SEC/govt registration, etc.

Hedge funds normally consider these confidential already, wilch23. Sorry.

If you look up anything, the best you'll EVER get to find in the public web would be the credentials, the AUM, or both. Nothing more than that. Prospective clients generally receive a non-disclosure agreement, and obviously a public forum sort of breaks that.

Prudence is the key word here. JohanVIA its not personal but a lot of scams has been hatched here in this site in the past so you could just understand that a lot of PMTers need solid proof. A person having no permanent address is a red flag. I mean the Filipino investor would want to know you personally not just business wise. They may ask of your facebook account so they could know who your friends are and how you are to them. Its just the way you build up trust. I mean after all this is the internet and we could be what we want to be or who we want to be. We are anonymous here at least for most of the time.

Of course everybody wants to be careful. So would I. But that is something else than discussing everything on a public board. If you read my original post, I even propose to meet.

Parang De ja Vu ah.

Maybe it would be more interesting if you can expound more on your points initial post:

Demographics of China - How do you plan to take advantage of this?

Technology Jump - How do you plan to take advantage of this?
