PHL to Host FIBA Asia Tournament After 40 Years

MANILA, Jan. 11 (PNA) -– The Philippines will be hosting the FIBA Asia championship for the first time in 40 years, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced on Friday.

FIBA Asia transferred the site of the prestigious basketball tournament from Beirut to Manila, in light of the volatile situation in Lebanon which originally won the right to host the tournament this year.

The FIBA Asia championship, which will serve as the qualifying tournament to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Madrid, will be held from August 1 to 11 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

2013 FIBA Asia Championship Moved to Philippines

KUALA LUMPUR (FIBA Asia Championship) - The FIBA Asia Executive Committee has decided to move the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship from Beirut, Lebanon to Manila, Philippines in view of the current situation in Lebanon and the rest of West Asia. The event will be played as per the original dates of 1-11 August 2013.

"Unfortunately, the current situation in the region and the on-going civil war in Syria, which has its indirect effect on the countries in the whole of West Asia, especially on Lebanon, creates doubts about the stability that we might not have, at least, till the fixed dates of our event," said FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian explaining the decision.

"In view of these facts, FIBA Asia Executive Committee decided to change the venue of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship from Beirut-Lebanon to Manila-Philippines."

The 2013 FIBA Asia Championship will also act as the qualifying event for the 2014 FIBA World Cup to be played in Spain. The top three teams from the FIBA Asia Championship will earn the right to represent FIBA Asia at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

ABL: San Mig Beermen Shock Champions Indonesia Warriors in ABL Season 4 Opener

JAKARTA, Indonesia (ABL Season 4): Last year’s runners-up San Miguel Beermen brokeaway midway through the first quarter, never looked back and went on to beat defending champions Indonesia Warriors 64-53 (Box scores) in front of the latter’s home crowd, in the season opener of the ABL Season 4 on Friday.

American Chris Daniels capped an offensive rebound to open the scoring for the game, but that was the only moment Indonesia Warriors were ahead on the scoreboard for the entire remainder of the game.

American Gabe Freeman and Fil-American Chris Banchero then combined to pull the Beermen away and the Filipino outfit never trailed thereafter.

Big Leagues Give Way to Fiba-Asia Tournament

Thursday, 17 January 2013 00:00

Responding to the appeal by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the University Athletic Association of the Philippienes (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have called off games which coincide with the country’s hosting of the 27th Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship in August.
Junel Baculi, athletic director of UAAP host National University, said the UAAP board met yesterday and decided not to schedule basketball games from Aug. 1 to 11 to ensure the success of the Fiba event which the country will host for the first time in 40 years.

The UAAP and the NCAA, two of the most prestigious collegiate leagues in the country, are the most active stakeholders of the SBP next to the PBA. In fact, almost all of the players being eyed to suit up for Smart Gilas are alumni of the two well-respected leagues

Idais Returns from International Retirement

AMMAN, Jordan (27th FIBA Asia Championship): The last two FIBA Asia Championships saw WABA team Jordan create history every time.

At the 25th FIBA Asia Championship at Tianjin (China), the Al Nashama Jordan won their first medal – a bronze – beating WABA archrivals Lebanon in the medal game and two years later at the 26th FIBA Asia Championship at Wuhan (China) in 2011, Jordan went all the way through to gold medal before losing by a whisker to hosts China.

Now, as things begin to take shape – at least on paper and in planning – for this August’s 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in the Philippine capital of Manila comes a heartening news for the Al Nashama fans is the news that one of the heroes of that bronze triumph three years ago at Tianjin Ayman Idais is ready to return from international retirement.

Fiba-Asia Secretary General Says Smart Gilas Team Considered a Top Contender for Title

7:49 am | Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Hosting a Fiba-Asia event “doesn’t come every year,” according to cage body secretary-general Hagop Khajirian. That’s why the Philippines, come August 1-11, could be a strong bet for the title.

“The Philippines playing in the semifinals (of Fiba-Asia), why not? Champion in Fiba-Asia, why not?” Khajirian asked when he met the press yesterday at the tournament’s official venue, the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

“It doesn’t come every year,” the Lebanese said of the country’s hosting, the first time in 40 years that the Philippines is the venue of such an event. “Get the best of the best (talents for the event). “But it will come as a result of hard work, and not by luck,” he continued. “There’s no luck in winning the championship.”

ABL: Beermen Douse Saigon’s Heat for Avenging Win

MANILA, Philippines (ABL Season 4): Last year’s runners-up San Miguel Beermen came up with a clinical performance in their first game at home, beating Saigon Heat 100-74 (Box scores) on Friday, thus avenging the 89-92 defeat they suffered earlier this ABL Season 4, last Saturday.Gabe Freeman found his shooting touch and his 21 points with 10/17 field shooting led the Beermen to become the first team to cross the 100-point mark in ABL Season 4.  The 27-year-old forward was also the Philippine team’s leading rebounder with 9 collections.

Brian Williams added 18 points along with pulling down 6 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists. Chris Banchero and Asi Taulava added 14 points each for the Beermen who finished the game with an impressive 59% to Heat’s meager 39% in field shooting. After an almost even battle in the first quarter at the end of which they held a 5-point lead, the Beermen took advantage of rival spearhead David Palmer’s foul trouble and the subs       equent break from his presence on the court and made a run. (Game Details).

Wheels Set in Motion for 27th FIBA Asia Championship at Manila

MANILA, Philippines (27th FIBA Asia Championship): The wheels have been set in motion for Manila to host the 27th FIBA Asia Championship from Aug 1-11 with the signing of the host agreement between FIBA Asia and Samahang Basketbol Ng Pilipinas (the National Federation of the Philippines) at the Filipino capital on Sunday.

FIBA Asia was represented by FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian and the SBP was represented by its president Manny V Pangilinan. The signing of the host agreement in effect tips off the preparations for the biggest basketball show in Asia with the nitty gritty of all departments starting to be worked out.

“We have in effect handed over this baby (the 27th FIBA Asia Championship) to SBP,” FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian. “FIBA Asia will certainly not wash its hands off, but then our role will gradually become more supervisory and only to provide the support. It will be SBP which will execute and implement all that is needed to make the event a success,” he added.

PBA Owners Agree to Give Way to FIBA Asia Championships Tilt

7:22 am | Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

The support for the ideal preparation for the country’s participation in the FIBA Asia Championships continues to snowball after Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) owners agreed to extend the upcoming Commissioner’s Cup while rescheduling the season-ending Governor’s Cup. This was announced by PBA commissioner Chito Salud through the league’s official Twitter site.

“The PBA team owners have agreed to make way for the FIBA Asia tournament by transferring the third conference of the current 2013 season from the original May-July schedule to August to October. To counter the negative effects on the member-teams of the resulting protracted break between conferences, the second conference will be extended by adopting the format of the recently concluded Philippine Cup,” said Salud.

MANILA (PNA) - “The goal is to make the top three, the dream is to win it all.”

With this in mind, national coach Chot Reyes yesterday submitted a 17-man pool of candidates to the PBA board of governors. It is from this list where the Philippine team that will carry the country’s colors when it hosts the 27th FIBA Asia men’s championships will come from.Finishing with at least a bronze medal will enable the country to qualify to the FIBA World Cup next year, while winning the crown will end the Philippines’ 28-year title since a team coached by American Ron Jacobs and reinforced by three naturalized citizens last won in 1985.

Recommended to comprise the national pool were Jason Castro, Jimmy Alapag, Larry Fonacier, Ryan Reyes, Ranidel de Ocampo, Kelly Williams and Jarred Dillinger, all of newly-crowned Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text; L.A. Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra, Mac Pingris of San Mig Coffe, Jun Mar Fajardo of San Miguel Beer, Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan of All-Filipino runner up Rain or Shine; Sonny Thoss of Alaska Milk, Garry David and Japeth Aguilar of Batang Pier and Gilas Pilipinas 2 mainstays Marcus Douthit and Greg Slaughter.

Reyes Holds First Practice of Gilas Pilipinas

MANILA, Philippines (27th FIBA Asia Championship): The 17-man preliminary roster of Gilas Pilipinas, as the National Team of the Philippines is becoming to be known, had its first practice on Monday night under coach Vincent ‘Chot’ Reyes amidst calls for a spirited and skillful showing that will make the millions of fans happy when the team takes on the might of FIBA Asia giants in the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila from Aug 1-11.

“We fought hard to get hosting rights after 40 years. Thank you for being here. Let’s go to Spain,” MVP, as the SBP chief is popularly known.“Your country is behind you. Put your best foot forward,” SBP Executive Director Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios called upon the roster.“If not now, when? If not us, who?” hollered PBA Commissioner Chito Salud.

Gilas to Draw 13th in FIBA-Asia Tilt

(The Philippine Star) | Updated February 16, 2013 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes has confirmed that the Philippines will pick 13th in the FIBA-Asia Championships draw order and hopes to play the top favorites in the early going instead of the dangerous knockout quarterfinals in bidding for one of three qualifying tickets to represent the region at the 24-nation world tournament in Spain next year.
It will only be the third time in FIBA-Asia’s 53-year history that the Philippines is hosting the biennial competition. The Philippines struck gold in the two previous championships hosted by Manila in 1960 and 1973. The 27th FIBA-Asia Championships will be held here Aug. 1-11 with the SM Mall of Asia as the primary venue and Ninoy Aquino Stadium the secondary.
