if US/Iran goes to war (which appears to be going that way), booom yan mga oil exploration firms ninyo. if not, stagnant lang yan or could possibly go down some more. If ever there's a war and the US goes for a quick victory, bagsak ulit presyo ng oil nyan.

As for Mining, i think our country is now caught in a mining euphoria/bonanza. Public awareness on our vast mining potential is now fast gaining ground. Sana lang wag gawin palagatasan ito ng mga corrupt elements of our government. This upcoming EO to be signed by Pnoy will take care of that (i hope so).

so my answer would be, for long term ill go for mining, mid-term oil.

@moto,

my reasons?

very volatile
no intrinsic value on current market price
dangerously leverage
fundamentally unsound

For long term ill go for Oil Firms, for mid term ill go for Mining.

My reason.

Everybody knows were running out of oil.
Everybody needs oil.
China needs oil.
Fundamentally unsound i would not say so, bare in mind that the money you spend back then and the money you spend now for drilling operations would be roughly be the same. equipment doesn't change, procedures doesn't change even the manpower doesn't change, Only the product changes price.
And I think as compared to Mining Operations cost and post operations cost combined, Oil firms are cheaper.

One only needs to drill a hole when using and plug the hole after use, as oppose to destroying a mountain and putting it back up again. (you have to rehabilitate the area you mine, you have to move people to relocation sites and also the politics involve).

no offense, pero masyadong hilaw ang reason mo about mining operation cost.

when i say fundamentally unsound, look at the financial conditions of listed philippine mining companies. better check closely their financial reports for the past decade. yan malinaw na hindi 'hilaw'.

My take...if on OIL vs. Mining here in Philippines..both were pretty skeptical as there were really no proven reserves, mostly pure exploratory based inventory..(well done scientifically naman).  PCOR is a downstream bussiness and I would not bet my money on it. OIL firms got the big money on the upstream bussiness and not on the downstream bussiness. If Philex petroleoum and other exploration listed oil company hit the paydirt then..thats money.  Bottomline for me I would bet my money on the mining than in oil in our settings.

I've worked with different oil companies before and i beg to disagree. Oil exploration doesnt come in cheap nowadays, far from it. Its an ever dynamic industry. Expertise, technology, facilities, policies also change. There are tremendous environmental, political, and regulatory issues as well (recall BP). Hence it is one of the, most (if not THE most) heavily taxed industry in the world today. You have to employ different international contractors to get the job done. Mobilizing rigs onshore and offshore in the middle of the ocean entails billions of dollars in cost. Converting oil from crude to refined is another story. Building pipelines underground or underwater is another issue. Not to mention the daily cost of stockpiling oil inventory. Those are just the tip of the iceberg.

What if one day the world discovers a much cheaper and clean energy alternative besides oil and replaces it as the MAIN source of mankind's energy requirement. With the advent of technology, not far from impossible i think. :watchuthink:

For now clean energy is very expensive (Nuclear Fusion).
Bare in mind our country is suffering from lack of energy.
simplest way to fix that is power barge its alot cheaper compared to building a coal powered plant.

for now, lets see what happens after a year.
