Wow! Its a big loss. How he lost in stock market? I thought you will not lose as long as you have the patience to wait. I mean buy and then wait 'till it appreciate then sell as simple as that. That's what i think on stock market. Please enlighten me.

if it's as simple as that, then everyone will be  rich and won't need their jobs. :D

You can go to the stocks thread, there are lots of people more knowledgeable than me when it comes to stocks.

Hi! everyone. am new here my first post and question @ wintan2006 sir would you say that of all the different types of investment options we have right now it is wise to start with the mutual fund investment for me as newbie? before diving to other investments? (i.e. stocks, forex, etc.) Is it the first step or the training ground?...
the first step in everything, specially in investing, is investing in your financial literacy.
pag-aralan muna ang investment personality/risk profile mo, then pag-aralan ang investment options mo (stocks, bonds, MF, etc)), then focus on the ones u like.

learn how to drive a car BEFORE u drive a car..

^ So how will you compare stocks and mutual bond in terms on profit? (if its comparable)..
stocks vs mutual fund?

assuming u are equally knowledgeable on both, then mas ok ang stocks, kasi u have direct control on every aspect....saka less restrictions & expenses (sa MF/UITF merong mandatory holding period, management fees, etc)

just my view.. hope this helps :)

You should define yourself when you enter stock market. Are you an investor or a trader? A Stock market investor only buys stocks regularly and don't sell. This don't need a lot of time and these are the people who sees opportunity pag down ang market kse ON SALE ang mga shares. On the other hand, a Trader is the one who buys and sells stocks shares regularly and nakabantay lagi sa uptrend and downturns. Sumasakit lagi ang puso and ulo pag downturn. Plus dapat magaling ka and knowledgeable sa mga pinipili mong stocks.

^ sumasakit ulo during uptrends OR downtrends.
pero ang investor, minsan sumasakit rin ulo nyan. :)

both types should be knowledgeable sa stocks. ang main difference para sakin is mas active ang trader sa pagmanage/modify ng portfolio.

In stocks market u are left to choose which stocks you will buy. This is exciting as a newbie kse its first hand information sayo whether you profited or lost sa stocks na napili mo. But if you are really serious investor, stock market can be an investment vehicle. The same way ang gagawin mo dito the concept of money cost averaging. This is buying regularly like every month, regardless of the cost per share of the stock you chose. How will you know naman if that stock will give growth to your money? Of course need mo maging updated sa economic news and better you should have a financial mentor...haay, daming requirement. Pero un nga, if you want to get away all these troubles, invest in Mutual Funds. There is Fund Manager that knows better than us, knows where to diversify our money, knows what companies will give high returns and most esp u are celebrating kapag downturn ang economy kse you can buy so many shares dahil mura lng.

assuming u are equally knowledgeable on both, then mas ok ang stocks, kasi u have direct control on every aspect....saka less restrictions & expenses (sa MF/UITF merong mandatory holding period, management fees, etc)

Buying shares sa stock markets like citiseconlune or BPI equities, are all subjected to tax, whenever you buy or sell. Sa MF naman ang tawag is entry fee and exit fee. Kaya nman may holding period para wala ka ng babayaran na exit fee once u decided to withdraw after the holding period. Sa Stock market, when u sell, wait ka for a buyer and naka que kayo, if walang nagkagusto sa selling price mo, babalik sa stock portfolio mo, while sa MF, outright u can sell kse ang MF companies mismo ang buyback ng shares mo.

yes, sa MF u can sell outright, pero pag if u intend to sell within the holding period, u incur extra fees. correct me if im wrong.
may management fee rin. not sure if this is imbedded in the entry fee.

sa stocks, the fees u incur depend on how active u trade/invest.

teka, yang quote mo, san mo nakuha yan?
yung part na "In stocks market u are left to choose which stocks you will buy...u can buy so many shares dahil mura lng. "
hindi ako nagsabi nyan.

it must be part of your reply, no?
if yes.. ang masasabi ko lang...
Fund managers are not necessarily better than us... specially if u see yourself as part/future part of the minority who do well in trading/investing.
if one is not inclined to do the "dirty job", then ok ang MFs, etc ....do not go into stocks/forex/futures/options trading/investing.
pero if u let MF/fund manager/others handle your money, expect to make mediocre/average returns. (unless u found a fund manager/MF/UITF that does consistently well... & u invested during a bull market/favorable market condition)

a new good source is Peso and Sense Youtube.. It simplify the different finance terms in Filipino language.

IMHO, when it comes to Financial Literacy, nothing really substitute if you have mentors and fellow investors who you meet frequently.

Books are good sources, but it boils down kung kaya mo i-interpret and i-implement whatever is written there. I remember what Chinkee Tan mentioned on one of his book.. Kung ano man daw ang nababasa mo, you have to treat it like eating a fish.. Swallow what you feel to eat and spit out (like tinik, bones, etc) any principles na ayaw mo.

Maganda siguro kapag diverse yung sources mo for financial literacy. Books, sites, forums, experts and siyempre talks. Pero be aware nalang siguro na not all resources are 'good'. Learn to question the content and look into both pro and anti arguments.

Ganito ako magbasa eh, medyo careful ako in choosing what to believe in.

Books that helped me? Fundamentals of Finance na book namin sa class, Malcolm Gladwell books, 33 strategies of war, the art of war, atsaka ibang finance e-books na nakuha ko sa internet.
