Where can I buy bonds now? What's the normal placement amount and yields? I hope there are high-quality bonds in the market.

I think the minimum nowadays is 1M...if not 5M. Returns are prolly around 5 to 6%..for 5yrs.

Alternatively..mag MF or UITF ka na lang.

Try mo habol BDO Tier 2, kung sa tingin nyo feasible, sa bdo mismo, hannggang this week nalang ata, 6-6.5% daw rate 10 years, with call option of 5 years, minimum is 500K....

Another option is a variable unit-linked life insurance policy, aka, VUL, which typically allows you to select the type of fund (e.g. 100% bonds) while offering you protection benefits. If you don't have 1M or 5M, your option is to go with pooled funds such as VUL, MF, or UITF. Plus, you take advantage of the scale that these funds have (some of them manage billions worth of bonds), and the skill of the fund managers (they typically have years of experience in dealing with bonds that they can fall back on).

Quite the contrary... in case there would be a financial  turmoil and BDO will be affected (as financial institutions are likely interconnected), investing on Tier 2 bonds may be very risky.  Tier 2 bonds is a form of subordinated debt; it has even lower priority than bank depositors.

We must try first to understand what Tier2 bonds are. And our banks in the country are not the same as in US or Europe. They are far more conservative.

It's on topic. You were talking of buying bonds, and someone else mentioned MF and UITF as an alternative if you don't have the minimum amount, and I pointed out VULs as an alternative too since all three MF, UITF, and VULs have bond funds.

Also, I would recommend looking at these:
List of Government Securities Dealers as of February 17, 2011 - these dealers trade in treasury bills and bonds
What are Treasury Bills - this has a listing of some banks with contact numbers of their treasury dealing departments

There are others who offer a fixed rate corporate bonds at 5, 7 and 10 years with different interest rates. I'd like to know if it is still subject to withholding tax? TIA :)

^ yes all bonds are subject to witholding tax as a standard but there are exemptions i cant give any details here because professionals in tax needed to earn their keep.

^ nagbigay ba ng exemption ang SMIC bonds na 7-year and 10-year tenor?  ang pagkakaalam ko, nag withold pa rin ang mga banks na nag offer ng SMIC bonds recently.

Technically di talaga pwede as in you need a broker in both primary and secondary market. Di mo siya mabibili ng solo na nakapangalan sa iyo ang bond. It's a street name ownership. Putting your money in this instrument assure your of tax exemptions on Corporate Bond with more than 5 years tenure and some special gov't issued bond that are tax exempted such as Renewable Energy Bonds in other countries.

Interested din ako sa bonds pero sa RTBs. How do I go about it?

Pag nagtatanong ako sa banks, sinasabi nila alang available? or ignore lang nila ako kasi mukhang gusgusin ako.

@ait, try mo treasury department ng banks...wag lang sa branches, for me mga branches mostly walang alam kasi....

And also RTB, try mo magtiming ng bagong "release", kasi pag through secondary market medyo lugi ka na sa rates usually, may mga accrued computations etc...

Avoid long term bonds their value fall when interest rate rise.

Note: To investors please be aware of the characteristics and risks of securities/ investments before you decide to invest.

I agree to some extent. Thats why I made some quick money last year selling my rtb when BSP released another tranch of RTBs with lower rates.

Which means if the interest rate goes up, your existing RTB loses value, as what finance123 mentioned.

But if you have plans to hold it till maturity, it doesnot have any effect, since youre set on the rate that you got in to.

Specially if the investor has steady stream of income to invest, then he can continue investing in the newer RTBs with the increased rates in such a case.

thanks GS. dati abang nga ako sa Bureau of Treasury eh... pero ano ba yung mga primary market? banks ba indi? sensya na ala talaga akong idea sa RTBs or bonds for that matter.

Pero gathering information just in case tumamlay na stock market eh may paglilipatan.

@AIT, I havent tried bureau of treasury, but treasury department ng banks. Usually the treasury department of the banks are in their main branch. I also transact with trust department ng banks, they also offer RTBs, other than corporate bonds etc., kaso mostly 1M ang minimum investment ng trust department.

Mababa now yun rates but if you want some conservative investing, this is ok....Yun RTBs nowadays haba na ng terms, 10yrs to 25yrs...but can be traded in secondary market.

Btw, primary market means coming from the government, and they sell the rtbs via banks, usually there will be announcement kung kelan magrelease ng new RTBs, then you make a reservation through the bank. Secondary market naman, is through the bank din. Yun nga lang the seller is the owner of the RTB. Sensya na, medyo sabog yun explanation ko here :)

not sure if I got it right, ganun nga ginagawa ko dati, abang sa BoT then punta sa banks for reservation kunyari (nagtatanong lang) kasi mabilis daw maubos. Yung RTBs ba minimum din is around 1M?

no plans of entering into bonds yet.. saka na pag tumamlay na stock market.

di sigurong masama kung maghanda ng mas maaga. at least by that time indi na ako tatanga-tanga.

thanks GS!

No prob man, good to be ready, additional knowledge din yan.... Yun minimum is from 5,000-20,000 if im not mistaken...also, when the time comes that youll plunge into rtbs, make sure take into consideration yun rates na net, kasi its subject to 20% withholding tax kahit 25yrs pa yang term..ΓΌ

Bonds are securities, classified as fixed income investments. It may be issued either by the government (or government agency) or a top private corporation. Either ways they appoint banks or other institutions to underwrite their public bond offering.

The minimum amount varies from Php5,000 to even Php50,000.

DBP at 3.9% p.a. for 5 years tenor, tax-free #forgot to ask the minimum for initial tranche. methinks they positioned to catch the outward SDA funds
