All about Treasury Bills (T-bills)

hi guys, it me again, ocirejgm.

Well, ngayon sobrang interested talaga ako sa passive entrepreneurship, so meron ako uling tanong?

Paano ba bumili ng T-bills. yung pang 3 months? Nabasa ko kasi sa isang newpaper na mataas ngayon ang rate ng T-bills, umabot na nga daw ng 5.7% after maturity. So gusto ko sanang subukan. Ang kaso, diko alam kung saan ang kung magkano ang minimum. tulong pls

alam ko minimum sa t-bills is 100k at available siya at most of your suking commercial banks. Pero take note 5.7% p.a siya ah, that means per anum. Its not big compared to some rates offered by time deposits. Ung Uitf ok kaso this May ang baba.

ah ok so yung 5.7% is per annum, hinde per maturity. so kung magmamature  yung T-bill in 3 months, parang 5.7% divided by four, o 1.45 lang kada maturity. Tama ba? So kung meron kang investment na 100k tapos bumili ka ng T-bills na me maturity na 3months, edi kumiya ka lang ng 1 thou and 450 pesos?

iba iba depended sa bank pero 100k usually minimum sa t-bills, meron ako nakita sa business section dati na pwede as low as 5k pero di ko na tanda kung saan bank...

un computation is 100,000.00 x 5.7% x 90 days divided by 360

Landbank ata dati P5k lang ang minimum sa t-bills. Gamit ko ngayon BPITrade, linked dun sa BPI account ko. Madali lang bumili ng t-bills (saka FXTNs, stocks, kahit units of mutual funds) pero P100k nga ang minimum. Pero 2% p.a. ang interest kapag at least P5k ang monthly ADB mo.

RTBs (retail treasury bonds) ata yung may minimum na P5K.

ah, RTBs pala. dami-dami kasing investment products, nakakalito na silang lahat hehe. hmm nde ko ma-check sa BPITrade ko ngayon, pero nagbebenta ba sila ng T-bills? ang naaalala ko yung RTBs nga ang binibili ko.

anyway baka may nakita kayong magandang source explaining the pros and cons of these different investment products, share nyo naman para maintindihan talaga natin ano ba ang maganda at bagay para sa isang tao.

If you are a businessman and you cant predict when you will need the money, stick with time deposits. place it every 30 days lang so you will know when you can withdraw your money

thanks cool for the info, akala ko kasi yung quoted na percent eh per maturity. so, maliit lang pala talaga yung kikitain ng pera ko kung ilalagay ko lang sa T-bills.

Me isa pa po akog tanung, anu ang mangyayari kapag nagmature na yung IOU mo, kaylngan mo natalagang iwithdraw, o pwede mo pang idelay yung IOU mo? Pede ba itong itrade?

Yup as cool_78 stated if you're not sure when you will be needing funds best to stick with short term bank deposits (TD or Special Savings account)

Also take note that the Tbill rates nowadays are not very enticing. In fact some banks would give higher than tbill rates for a 30day placement bu of course depending on the amount of placement.

Tbills are considered marketable securities. Yes you can trade it in the secondary market but you normally need a bank or a financial institution to do that on your behalf.  However take note that there is a chance that you would get less than what you paid for. It is always best to hold to maturity these kind of investments so that you minimize market risk.

I have some questions on treasury bills and bonds. I understand that bonds, notes and bills are tradeable depending on their market price. I also understand that their market price depends on current interest rates. My questions are:

1. How do I know what the current interest rate is? Can that be found online somewhere?
2. How do I compute for the price of the bond/note/bill based on the current interest rate?

there is a benchmark for t-bills/bonds in PDEX www.pdex.com.ph you can usually see it using a bloomberg system or sa businessworld newspaper the price of the bond is computed by computing the present value of all coupon payments plus the principal. i hope that helps.
