Mio gelati

The only dessert truck at the moment, Mio Gelato offers gelato churned fresh on the day it’s served. Conventional cream flavors and fruity sorbets are offered. But if you’re going to have a scoop, you may as well tap their premium or alcoholic flavors: cream cheese frosting, crème brulee, s’mores, red velvet cake, Baileys, and beer, among plenty of others.

They have facebook and twitter account for those anyone interested.

Binalot creates own 'jolli-jeep' food van

MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA—Local fast food company Binalot Fiest Foods Inc. is expanding its operations outside fixed establishments to one that is highly mobile.
Based on the food vans used in the United States, the Binalot Food Van is also akin to the “jolli-jeep” concept popularized by local food vendors in Makati City.
Binalot’s food van is actually a pickup truck with its back converted into a mini-kitchen. The sides and rear of the pickup open to reveal the kitchen as well as the counter where patrons can get their orders and eat. The van also carries some chairs and tables for dining patrons.
The vehicle is a Mitsubishi pickup with the conversion done by local builder Centro Manufacturing Corp.
According to Binalot president Rommel Juan, the food van will have the same offerings as those in traditional establishments. The food will also remain wrapped in fresh banana leaves, among the aspects that made Binalot popular.
Staple foods on the menu will include the popular adobo, bistek, tapa, tocino, sisig, and longganisa. The food van essentially aims to expand the company’s operation and address specific markets where banana-wrapped food can have high demand.
Juan noted that there will be pre-approved sites for franchising of the mobile food businss. He also expects uptake in areas with fewer food establishments.
Along with the food van, Juan said that they will also pursue offering a supervised franchising scheme wherein a possible franchisee can allow Binalot to manage their business for them.
This particular service is targeted at overseas Filipino workers who want to have their own business in the Philippines but have no one to help them manage the operations.
“This service will enable potential franchisees to have the sense of security that their business is being managed well,” Juan said.

The pros and cons

As a business owner, having a food truck sounds like a dream: the initial investment is lower than having a storefront, there’s little clean up in the area as everything is self-contained, and employees can do multiple tasks as drivers, order takers, and cooks.

While simple, food trucks in the country do have their limitations, which Romeo learned the hard way.

While Romeo’s food truck has gained a loyal following—it’s the Angus beef tapa that’s most popular on his menu--it’s difficult to bring in customers when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

On a good day, he and his partners earn anywhere between P6K to P8K, however he admits, “Since June, during the rainy season, sales have really crashed.”

But he does see a possible upside, to the detriment of his employees: he can readily pack up his business, depending on the weather. “That’s the good thing; we can stop our business temporarily, and there’s no loss. However it’s hard for our employees; we pay them monthly not per day, and if we stop, then they can’t be paid. Of course employees want a steady job.”

Taxes and other concerns

He also discovered that local government units were initially hesitant about taxing his business. “Some cities allow street vendor permits, but it’s not applicable to us because we’re big. Although technically, we’re also street vendors. [When it comes to] taxing us, it’s still a gray area.”
It’s also not as simple as setting up shop in an open parking lot. “That’s not allowed, because we’re engaged in a business. We need permits to sell.”

Support group on wheels

Romeo has found support in other food trucks owners. After running into each other at several food truck events, the owners of 12 food trucks have formed an association to address their concerns, and to help each other’s businesses. Thus, the Metro Manila Food Truck Association was born. “We’re very supportive, we all share the same sentiments,” he admits.

One of them is making sure to bring in other food trucks, if an opportunity arises. It works for both the food truck owners and the customers because if they sell as a group, “everybody is encouraged to try something new, because we all have different concepts.”
They’re also able to split the group if there are separate events, so they’re represented in different events. If one food truck can’t make it to an event, they can recommend other food trucks.

As a group, they can also negotiate their rates, and see to it that the event organizer can provide basic necessities, such as electricity. “Since we’re in a private area, we see to it that they provide power, because the cost of electricity can be expensive.”
