Here are the steps to open a PayPal account.

How to open a PayPal account

  • 1. Sign up for an account by visiting the PayPal website and clicking the “Sign Up” link located at the top-right portion of the page.
  • 2. Choose the PayPal Account Type applicable to you. First, select the Country or Region where you live.

Choosing your country from the drop-down menu opens a page that shows three PayPal account types.

Personal Account is obviously for personal purposes while Premier Account and Business Account are merchant accounts used for online businesses.

Unless you are sure you want and need a Premier or Business Account, I suggest you choose Personal Account first. You can upgrade to Premier or Business Account anytime, but cannot revert to Personal Account once upgraded.

Confirm your “Language Preference” then click the “Continue” button.

  • 3. Fill up the Account Sign Up Form. Completely and correctly fill in the sections “PayPal Account Owner Contact Information,” “PayPal Account Login,” “Password Recovery,” and “Security Measures” then click the “Sign Up” button at the bottom.
  • 4. You’re almost there! You are now asked to verify your account by adding a credit or debit card. You may choose to add one at this stage or skip this step and move on to the next by clicking the “Cancel” button. Remember, though, that adding a card and enrolling in the Verification Program are necessary to be eligible to withdraw PayPal funds.
  • 5. Almost done! In order to complete the registration, confirm your email address. Do this by checking your inbox for a PayPal email then click the confirmation link there. You may also choose to confirm your email address later by clicking “Continue” in this page.
  • 6. Hurray! You now have your own PayPal account. The Personal Account Overview page will contain your name, email address, and account status.

Congratulations! You now are a certified PayPal account holder!

Do note that unverified accounts have a sending limit of $100. To be able to send without limit, the account must be verified and enrolled in the Expanded Use Program.

How to verify my PayPal account?

Verified PayPal members living outside of the U.S. complete the Expanded Use process by:

  1. Confirming their email address
  2. Adding a credit card
  3. Entering the Expanded Use Number

How to add a credit card to my PayPal account?

  1. Click the My Account tab.
  2. Click the Profile subtab.
  3. Click the Credit Cards link in the Financial Information column.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Fill out the Add Credit Card form.
  6. Click Add Credit Card.
  7. You have successfully added your credit card to your PayPal account.

How to enroll in the Expanded Use Program?

  1. Upon adding your credit or debit card, complete the Expanded Use enrollment wherein PayPal charges your card a small fee ($1.95).
  2. The fee appears on your bank account statement accompanied by a unique, randomly generated four-digit Expanded Use (EXPUSE) number.
  3. Locate your four-digit Expanded Use number, either on your next paper or online credit card statement. The Expanded Use number is located right before the word PayPal in the description of the Expanded Use fee charged to that credit card.
  4. Log in to your PayPal account and click the Complete Expanded Use Enrollment link on the Account Overview page to complete your enrollment.

It usually takes 2-3 business days for the PayPal Expanded Use Number to appear, depending on the issuing bank. If you do not have online access to your statement, wait until you receive your physical statement to check your four-digit PayPal Expanded Use Number.

Spread the word and invite others to open a PayPal account now!

Bago lang po ako sa PAYPAL….. actually i was able to enroll and get verified merely by following several steps shared by paypal bloggers sa net. but still hindi ko alam how safe paypal is: here are some question that could help clearout my mind:

    1) if a person gets my email and pay me via paypal how long will the transaction reflect on my PAYPAL current balance for me to know that the transaction made was good???

    2) Is there any risk in PAYPAL similar to Western Union, that if a person who pays first would have a greater risk that his counter part would run away from the obligation agreed upon????

    3) If a person pays through paypal, if the second party has scammed the payer. Is there a possibility that the payer can cancel the payment made or not?????

    please helppppppppppppp. tnx

Hi James. I hope you can help. My PayPal balance is zero but I have 2 credit cards linked to my account. I need to send payment online but I get a message that I have to add money for my transaction to go through. I read in previous posts that PayPal gets funds from my credit card if my PayPal balance is insufficient. How do I do this? I also read in PayPal’s FAQ on how to change/manage Funding Options but I cannot find these buttons!

    Please help! Thanks!

Hi James. I hope you can help me re-establish my account with paypal international. My original paypal account was opened in January 2008 linking my credit card in the process and using my e-mail address @ raularc0407@yahoo.com with confirmation code 1608-1712-1541-5892-8413. Unfortunately, there was, according to paypal, unauthorized accessed, which I failed to act on it because I did not know the correct procedure. My account was suspended. I re-applied linking my other credit card using the above e-mail address, which I received paypal’s confirmation code 1022-6381-0783-4719-1915. Paypal required identification documents, which I submitted. I waited for their confirmation. When I log in to my account, I noted that paypal permanently dis-abled my account.

Can You help with htis problem, I need this very badly because of my international transactions, which is for my own protection.

    thank you
