Stock Market for OFWs
« on: Feb 09, 2012, 11:43 PM »
Hi Guys,

I am an OFW. I am interested to invest in the stock market and I would like to know if it is a good idea to get the services of a "finance manager" from the Philippines to personally manage the money that I plan to invest.

At present, how much is the "reasonable" brokers commission for every transaction.

Thank you in advance!

I'm not working in BPI but i heard of their Asset Management website, just search it and you'll find more info (and you can also drop an email)

I'm using Citisec and the charges are Php 20 commission, Php 2.40 tax and few cents to few pesos for other charges. Just like when i bought a Php 5k stocks i was charge Php 23.50

Looks like you will invest a big sum of money cause you are looking for a personal investment adviser :) i also heard that PNB is offering the same like BPI (all the bank it seems)

Thanks decoder.

I'm not going to put big sum of money. I may have used the word "finance manager" incorrectly hence it gives a wrong connotation about my financial status. :hihi:

Anyways, I would just like to make the most out of the money I saved. I've read that it is better to put the extra money you have on stocks than to let it sit on banks. Of course, there is always the risk involved.

Companies like citisec offers low commission charges but you have to monitor your stocks regularly. Unfortunately I do not have the luxury of spending a lot of time reading and analyzing the market.
Not considering the fact that my knowledge of the stock market is very elementary.

Do you recommend a stock broker company instead of banking institution to manage the money I am planning to put on stocks? Which is better in terms of "decision making" and lesser commission charges?

Again thank you very much and I really appreciate your inputs and suggestions. :thankyou:

@ellyrraine, most financial advisers and brokerage offering the same service would require a min of 1M investment for them to manage your account.
if you don't have the time to manager your stock picks, then i suggest that you go for UITF & MF.
they are relatively cheaper and there's always a fund manager that oversees them with the basic aim of making gains with the fund they are managing.
you just buy some shares and you're better assured that your money will grow. check with your bank about this things.
BPI, BDO, Metrobank and Unionbank all have these things and many other banks, but they're the best in managing your finances.

Yeah i heard you must have at least 500k then you will have your own "banker" or "own customized portfolio" san ko ba ito narinig, sa PNB yta.

But ayun YES go to MF and IUTF instead. It's no brainer really, wou'll just fill up forms and send money to them and they will manage it. Most of the time depending on the economy ok nman talaga returns.

I also have BPI account and through bpiexpressonline.com i can buy IUTF with just a few clicks away (i also have PhilAm funds but i dreaded the thought of remitting money to them then sending fax/email and you still need to send the forms, im also an OFW so that's very expensive and inconvenience for me). Like last week i have an extra 2,000 pesos lang nman so ibinili ko na rin ng IUTF kasi yung bank account ko pang remit lng nman talaga, lagi ko lng iniiwanan ng maintaining balance.

Mayron din me CitisecOnline, im doing value investing lang, cost averaging, buying 5k of blue chips stocks lng every month kasi kahit fluctuating markets nabi-beat pa rin nya 3.5% time deposit so kako basta higher than TD ok na for me kesa natutulog sa bank.

Hello ...  :hello:

OFW ako from Riyadh...

pero last year.. i did found one broker... citiseconline ...

I was on holiday last year when i heard about this citiseconline.com and i had less than 24 hours before my flight back to Riyadh.... i went to their office directly and check it out, attend their seminar to learn more about it....... and i am glad that i did enroll and guess what ...with a MINIMUM OF PHP 5,000.00 Five Thousand Pesos only. ---- this amount of money is very much affordable for us OFW. Monhtly i have to set aside worth Php 5,000.00 for my skeds in buying stocks.

After I enrolled, I have an account active and ready to Buy Stocks... I was in Riyadh then when i place my first BUY (online)... and felt happy about it and no regrets.
its a long term investment ... all i did is buying spree on a monthly basis ..(prang nag-iipon lang ako ng pera or nagtatabi..that is less than SAR 500. riyals only)... basta sa montly skeds ko ... buy and buy lang... there were time na mataas ang selling... so i sell just to gain profit and buy another stocks... eventually it gained too.

one year later.... my equity has dramatically increased by 15% .... banks cant give that much out of interest...

ang payo ko lang po.... its best to equipped yourself with knowledge in any endeavor that you will engage with.

 :thankyou:

you can either go EIP through citiseconline, meron naman sila mga recommended stocks, you can just buy few shares every month as others suggested.

I, being OFW myself have MF on FAMI, PAMI and Sunlife, and at the same time have stocks portfolio c/o citiseconline. . .

whether you have an invesment officer or not, you would have to make a decision on how much risk you have to take. The amount of risk you are willing to take will dictate which investment vehicle you will choose.(with or without a financial officer)

If you have a big chunk or lump sum of money ready to be invested...i suggest you have to 'time' you entrance into the market.

If its just a small amount you want to save on a monthly basis...you can do EIP..whether 5K 10K or 50K...i think cost averaging is a good method you can easily do your self.

If you do cost averaging...there is no need to constantly monitor your stocks...and being an OFW myself before...i think you may have the time.

take charge of your money.
this is not the time to let 'financial managers' make financial decisions for u. magulo ang mundo.

.i think cost averaging is a good method you can easily do your self.
cost averaging is ok (dangerous if misused) but far from the best.

I am also an OFW here in Dubai. Just started investing in citiseconline last June 2011 & had my portfolio increased by 10% for 6 months only. Saving it in the banks is totally out of the question now. Currently I am now into active trading. I just started last January & increased my portfolio by 10% less the taxes & all in just 2 months! So i suggest to start your plan now & see yourself from financial freedom.

@TS..
I agree to the suggestions above. I would rather have my money managed by me. I'm on stock market trading for more than a year narin. Noong una eh pakonti-konti lang din na shares just to test the water at for controlled risk bilang newbie sa stock trading. Dapat matiyaga lang magbasa-basa at of course experience is the best teacher. Masaya na ako kapag nakakapag sell ako with 200SAR profit dahil katumbas nun is 2K+ narin in peso. Goodluck sayo...
