^Yup. The moment I read that poll...it reminded me of this thread...and how people are really afraid or sensitive above Financial Matters.

Its easy for them to talk about their multi million houses, cars, jewelry, bikes, etc etc...and yet..they are very sensitive when salaries na ang pinaguusapan..he he.

Bakit kaya? Who knows..baka di naman totoo. Nobody will sue them kung di totoo ang sinabi nila sa forum.

nope desiderata, it was just a quick trip to Sg, halos umutot lang ako dun tapos balik na ulit.
wow, bago yan sa pandinig ko a.
"pumunta ko SG para umutot"
big time ka talaga Vic!

In another forum...there was a poll to find out how much the posters were making in a year..... I was suprised sa reactions.
Its totally unbelievable. Of all forums..i think those people have the highest networth..tapos sila pa yung takot na takot. Or insecure..or maybe hiding something.
Buti pa dun sa isang forum na mostly average ang members..they can easily talk about salaries and be transparent and true to themselves.
para sakin, it's not surprising at all.
some rich people are more humble than most average people. :D

average people mahilig magchikahan; most rich people dont have such interest
& it's not about being untransparent; they just mind their own business & are private people

Sabi nga nila "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." You will actually find it instinctively if ang isang tao ay kailangan ng mentoring. Mas ok siguro to show them by way of example, pag nakikita kasi nila ma curious din sila and magtatanong about it. Mahirap din po kasi maging credible if wala pa tayong concrete evidence to support our teachings.

thanks for your comment alx. i do agree -- experience is king when it comes to financial matters, among other things. thats in the long-term, in the meanwhile, we want to mainstream money or business or investment talk sa mga taong malapit sa atin at hindi (sana) tayo jina-judge kaagad-agad.. hindi ung puro chismis tungkol kina shaina at JL ang pinagkakaabalahan nila...

parang ung nadinig kong kanta sa radyo kanina:
Quote
"gawing langit ang mundo, makakaya natin to...

if that's their concern, then why even join an online forum in the first place? in general, we are all just sensitive about money. its not just almost like religion as nanashi earlier said... its also true with any subject that we think are too intimate or personal (money, family, sex, drug problems, etc).

[I’m going to Sing tonight. So while waiting at the airport, I’m writing this... please bear with me, im effin' bored waiting to board. see wat i mean?]

I just came from a financial literacy talk a few weeks back. The speaker talked about things that I already know or read about from here, but its interesting that he can convey the message about money and personal finance like he’s talking about the latest showbiz chika. I can say that everyone bought it. I wonder if I can do that.

Lately, I’ve been taking a lot of unwarranted flak and ”kutya” from my friends whenever they see me engrossed in money-related readings, books (bought 4 from booksale yesterday – kasalanan mo yan f/f), and online forums (PMT).  Don’t even get me started on how they “bully” me when I start talking about money, investments, and other ways of earning/increasing my income, parang sinasabi nila “dude, you cant read yourself into getting rich?!?” Financial literacy lang naman ang habol ko and how do you achieve that, di ba by reading, learning and then applying what you read? Once I asked them ano kayang magandang pasukin na business ngayon, they (except one) just poke fun at me and the whole idea of me getting business-minded. Madali daw malulugi kasi I’m not very good at salestalk, being the “resident kritiko” of our barkada – I mean, our tropa  (apparently “barkada” is so 1999).  Syempre ung mga business people madaling kausapin tungkol sa pera, but I don’t have any intention of replacing my friends just because they don’t share the same goal as mine.

I know (from our perspective), they are actually the financially ignorant bunch, and I should be the one laughing. But still, it’s a little unnerving if you are the odd-man out, right?  I’m mejo sorta kinda feeling like a dork, like I have lost 1,000 “cool points” just because i wanna build a steady stream of income outside the four walls of the firm. I feel the resistance in the form of kantyaw.  Dati kasi pag puro work-related ang usapan sa gatherings, I shut down the conversation by declaring: nerd alert, nerd alert!!!

Sabi nga ni Kiyosaki, there’s this notion that its rude to talk about money. Eto napansin ko na talaga ngang most people don’t talk about money and natuturn-off sila sa ganung usapan. Yung iba, talagang iniiwasan ang usapan na yan coz they don’t have the money to speak of. Understandable yan. That’s why I liked “My Maid Invests in the Stock Market” ni Bo Sanchez kahit oversimplified, kasi parang ang hirap ipag-connect yung idea na ang maid (mostly barely finished high school) ay magveventure into something as sophisticated as the stock market, yet it can be done pala. Wala ng ibang follow-up or clarificatory questions. Good enough reply na sana, atleast kako binasa.

From these simple scenarios, we can see that in general, many really feel uncomfortable talking and thinking about money.  That explains my friends’ skepticism about my “new mission”. It’s “uncool” to talk about money, unless its about what gadget or car or expensive hobby or thrill or vacation ang pwede mong maexperience gamit ang yong pera.

So my question to y’all, is how do/would you talk about money in such a manner that ordinary people will not take offense, will not laugh it off and poke fun at you for being “ambisyoso” or “nangangarap ng gising” and won’t look at “saving and investing” like its a Herculean task. Have you successfully done it (ie., talk about money and convert people into believers)?

Please share your thoughts, I’m very curious.

I havent given up on my pakners, i will still try to play the financial guru for them once ive got some hints of success and more credibility, cos right now ima noob with not a lot to show for it. but as an experiment, may be i/we could all do our part as advocates of financial literacy, sa ikauunlad ng bayan ika nga, kahit paisa-isa... we can try talking to our family/friends this long break (money talk ha, not geek talk, baka 5 minutes pa lang humihilik na sila pag binanatan natin ng mga financial jargons etc).  tapos observe their reaction – ilan ang aalis, ilan ang magpapatawa, ilan ang  mag “talk-to-the-hand” gesture, ilan ang makikinig, ilan ang magsasabing, “sige nga, turuan mo nga ako/kami” at ilan ang magffollow-up call sayo.

Yan ang pabaon ko sainyo ngayong undas.  Ang hirap gawin noh? Sabi sayo e.

[Ok.. were about to board… thanks for keeping me company pmt]…

well said,,..

but i think ok lng naman siguro kahit ano sabihin nila basta they absorb what you've said about financial literacy..

for me i don't get to the point of money issues right away. medyo party pooper ang dating when the boys are trying to have a goodtime then money issue ipapasok mo. kadikit ng ng pera(or kakulangan ng pera) ang problems. they go hand in hand. imbes na mag-enjoy, they will be reminded of the reality & thinking of the future more often than not worries us di ba?

sa akin, nakita ko since meron din akong tight na group dati. we talk about sports, girls, local & international new, computer games, anything the group shared the same interest with. i would say something like pag tanda na natin at magkapamilya. tingin niyo ganun pa rin tayo ka-close? tingin niyo mga wife natin magkakasundo or papayagan pa kaya tayong lumabas? tingin niyo may yayaman sa atin?

a friend asked bakit mo naman natanong yan? sabi ko kasi dun na rin tayo papunta. somewhere in the future tatanda rin tayo, yan mga nakikita at niloloko niyong mga DOM. tayo na yan 20-30 years from now. hard to believe right now, but the time will come when we will need to pay(yes use money) just to get laid. kakatakot pero dun na tayo papunta. ni minsan ba hindi niyo naisip kung what will happen to you, 10-20-30 years from now? hindi niyo ba inambisyong yumaman? mamamasukan na nalang ba tayo habang buhay? ayaw niyo bang magkahelicopter para iwas traffic? alam mo naman pag barkada & at a younger age, anything seems possible & very idealistic pa tayo of what our future holds.

then from there kwento na, laki na utang ko sa ccard, i might need to change address pretty soon. ako wala pa ipon ni piso. si ano yayaman yan, madugas sa haitan e at barat. gusto ko pumasok sa business. pstt... ganda nun chick dun sa kabila o. may kasamang bading e, hindi kaya pokpok? oist business! ok, ano magandang business? club kaya para may tambayan tayo. di pwede you'll scare all the girls away saka baka mga waitresses mo e patusin mo pa. malulugi lang. kailan kaya ako kikita ng isang milyon? ako gusto kong magretire by age 40. yun yun sabi ko. tae 40 na ako ngayon. we talk about how cool it is to be rich, syempre kanya kanya ng imagination. hoy napapasarap kwento tagay mo na oy. teka ok na ako sa coke o cali ko. hehehe di ako nainom e.

fast forward 17-18 years. so far sa pito. 5 has been doing business. 1 malakas marketing non-life insurances & meron na rin growing grocery of 3-4 years. ang naiwan bestfriend ko. pinapamabait, pero pinakamahina naman loob. pinakalate nag-asawa kaya lately palang namumulat. they are doing bazaars now during weekends. suggest ko kasi to learn business, you gotta start selling something, anything. sa divisoria or binondo kayo mag-source ng supplies. dito lang ako. if kinapos ka sa puhunan. sososyo ako or ayain natin sila. saan man ako makakatulong, tutulong ako. there!

Haha! Then I'm in a company that do financial coaching seminars, dinala ko katropa ko, pamilya ko, pamilya ng tito ko at pamilya ng kapitbahay namin.
