MANILA, Philippines – A complaint has been filed at the office of the National Bureau of Investigation's Environmental and Wildlife Protection Investigation Division over a scam involving the controversial "tuko" (gecko) buy-and-sell market.

"Engineer France" (not his real name) said a group of individuals tricked him into paying a large amount of money for a gecko.

France said he was lured to participate in the illegal trade after hearing rumors that geckos sell for millions of pesos.

"Kahit saan ako magpunta, balitang-balita at talagang madaming naghahanap," said France.

His search for geckos ended when he met a contact in Bukidnon who was willing to sell him a gecko.

While the seller originally priced the gecko at P1 million, France said he was able to bring it down to P300,000.

When France met with his contact, he had no idea he was being conned.

"Iba 'yung may hawak ng tuko at iba 'yung magre-receive ng pera. Nung maiabot ko ang pera, nagtakbuhan na sila," sabi ni France.

The incident led France to seek assistance from police.

"Ibinulgar ko ito para hindi na marami ang mabiktima," he said.

Meanwhile, authorities encouraged the public to alert police when encountering con artists.

Speculations have been circulating that enzymes produced from the geckos' gall bladders can cure diseases, sparking the illegal trade.
DOH has earlier dismissed rumors that geckos can cure AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).

DOH spokesperson Dr. Eric Tayag has also warned the public that eating geckos may cause food poisoning.

One user of the site posted an ad offering P60 million for a 500-gram gecko.

A fan page on social networking site Facebook also featured a bidding page for geckos.

One Facebook user posted an ad, selling 2 geckos weighing 250 grams for P80,000 each.

The underground market has become a cause of concern especially since misinformation gave the market its legs.

“Walang nagpo-promote na may alam tungkol sa HIV or AIDS ang paggamit ng tuko. Sa katunayan, bawal sa ating bansa ang magkalat ng maling impormasyon,” said Chairperson Jonas Bagas of TLF-SHARE (Sexuality, Health and Rights Educators), a member of Philippine National Aids Council.

Bagas was referring to Republic Act 8504, which states that individuals who spread misleading information can be imprisoned for 2 years.

“Wala pa akiong nakikita o naririnig na any proof of that so I would call it a folkloric tale or a grandmother’s tale,” Ona said.

Balita daw na nakaka-cure daw ng AIDS itong dila ng tuko kaya in demand at malaki ang price nito sa mga bumibili na mga Doctor daw from WHO.

-If that were true then sana nabalita na ito sa CNN and may napublished sana na research report dito sa mga current medical journals. So far NONE

-If that were true, WHO would have at least made clear that they are conducting research experiments on such things and even the least made statements to local doctors as part of their ongoing program. So far none, and No doctor can attest to that...if you want proof then ask a Doctor, punta ka sa St.lukes and inquire and lets see kung pagtawanan ka lang nila.

-as far as i know WHO doesnt conduct such research instead Big Pharmaceutical companies are the ones would involve such things.

Another issue is the incredible sum of money , 60M and up for a lizard? Only people who are "desperate in need of money" would buy this joke. the question is "are you one of them?"...i hope not. if not the please "wake up" and stop dreaming.

Lastly "hearsay" , Do not ever believe in hearsay unless you made concrete proof that it really is real. How? get receipt, get photographs, have a verified identification of the buyers, get every facts straight and not just any mumbo jumbo "its true, coz i heard or read that it does from this people whom i don't even know!".....any thing that deviates or anything that is under the table from what i said is nothing but a scam.

for those who still believe in this outrageous tuko deals...please....don't let gullibility get the best of you.

may alaga akong tokay gecko which weighs approximately 400g then somebody offered 200 million ibenta ko lng daw sknya ung alaga ko and he said that he is a licensed buyer daw, well nde prin ako naniwala dhil npka-unrealistic nman ng market price ng tokay gecko, another story about tokay gecko is scam ung seller, it's true that he has a mature tokay gecko so if there's interested buyer, he'll ask for 10% as initial payment pero once nreceived n nia ung payment nwwala nlng ng parang bula c seller.. goodluck nlng po s mga hunters/sellers/buyers of tokay gecko =)
