When do corrections actually happen? Is there a pattern or trend for this?
yes, there is.
ang maikling sagot jan ay..
the market does not move in 1 direction. lagi may up and down na galaw.
nangyayari sila, chart-wise, on certain areas.

A trader would have gone to the finish line 7 times, and be gearing up for anothe run, and I'd still be dawdling on the same stretch of asphalt. I have no respect for the car's accelaration time of 0-100 kmh in .6 seconds daw  :D

pwede rin.  kaya lang wala akong kilala na trader na bilyonaryo like buffett, soros, etc.

mas marami trader ang nakukulong sa amerika.  VI i dont know any.

mas marami trader ang sira ang buhay after a short success in wall street.  VI i dont know any.

mas marami trader ang nag suicide.  VI i dont know any.

sa buhay ng tao, maraming paraan para kumita ng malaking pera.  ang tanong lang naman ay gaano kabilis ito kitain.  ako di bale na matagal basta hindi stressful sa buhay.

@ Ferrari

Dammit I was expecting a green joke for some reason!

@ bauer

Well, right now we've got Bruce Berkowitz (modern-day VI like Chuck Akre, Joel Greenblatt, Whitney Tilson, and... ugh, his name escapes me but I like the guy's style) as a negative example of a VI who's down in the dumps for his bets on AIG and Sears. Net redemptions very high, and with his major partners resigning, it looks like he's gotten into some conflict with his buddies.

EDIT:

Point ko lang, eh, some VI's have trouble too. Pero suicide o "sira buhay after short success"... yan wala ako alam.

TSO,

yung tinukoy mo na si Joel Greenblatt, Is it the same person who develop the Greenblatt formula?

return on capital
use of earnings yield (EBIT)

divide ebit by enterprise value?

Gig,

its good that your back. medyo hindi rin malinaw kay Dont and i explain it further.  Is it not clear pa ba?

I just think Don't has a very funny and valid point in arguing that "I cannot imagine driving to a destination without watching the road."  :) . . . but I know what you mean and I totally agree.

Kamusta na guys! How is your trading? Trading wise I have sold some securities just to have enough cash, about 10% of portfolio, going into the the greek vote and the supposed chaos that would ensue. Currently looking for cash add to my portfolio. I further suggest not selling your position rather look for fresh cash to put in your portfolio. Me thinks, if the euro crisis do materialize, you have ample cash to buy those excellent stocks on the cheap. This could be another golden opportunity as I think the Philippines will continue to enjoy robust growth in 3 - 5 years.Economist are always talking about the sweet spot or country is in ie  demographically, economically and politically. So lets invest in the stock market as less that 1% of our country men invest in it. Lets be part of the 1% hehehe!

P.S. the post is intended for practicing VI's and not for traders.

^hello gig, good to hear from you. the last time i remember sharing posts with you is the time of US-degraded + greek debt. That was 8 months ago?

i remember while everybody is scared to buy that time, you are on a buying spree!

i have learned something from your experience, and i will try to be very ready especially next couple of weeks. i think this coming weeks is a potential.

hoping to see your post of your activities this coming weeks.

I was discussing miko's style and mine ( i claim to be VI  :hihi:) and a companion likened it to cars, not the travel. Sabi, the thing we are doing daw, pag sya ang tatanungin, we might all be driving a premium car, in the same stretch of road---but to him, who gets to the finish line first is what matters.

i don't see any "finish line" in stocks, all i can see is a never ending ups and downs.

could be. traders may have gone 7 times in "finish line" and during the whole course - they win here they loose there; they take and give back; they win big, they loose big (if not all). It's not always the swift that wins the race.

Based on my experience before the financial collapse last 2007.  When the northern rock of England suffer a bank run.  The next thing I know is market collapse. This is one indicator I consider relevant.

I wouldn't worry just yet.  Cuz they're just closing their BRANCHES here, and not complete closure of the banks.  Parang si Ford, di ba they closed their factory here.

it was actually 2008.
the market collapse then was NOT caused by this bank run. it was an effect rather than the cause.

by the way, businesses like banks do close shop from time to time.
in this case, they closed because they needed liquidity.

Question! Im just a newbie, just a few months of investing.

I'm just wondering what triggered the dip last Oct 2011? I noticed many stocks went down around that month.
