Planning to take up Nursing so you can earn a lot when you practice the profession outside of the Philippines?

Think again, because if the decreasing demand for Filipino nurses continues, you may not be able to work abroad anymore.

According to the Philippine Nursing Association (PNA), the global demand for licensed nurses has been consistently decreasing since 2004.

The PNA attributes the declining demand to 3 factors:

1. Policy changes in countries hiring Filipino nurses

The United States is currently implementing visa retrogression while the United Kingdom is starting to rely again on local health workers.

2. “Oversupply” of nurses

As more Philippine nursing schools churn thousands of nurses year after year, the supply of nurses is beginning to catch up with the demand.

3. Deteriorating quality of nursing graduates

“Fly by night” nursing schools and “shortcut nursing programs” contribute to weakening the quality and, ultimately, the attractiveness of Filipino nurses to nurse-importing countries.

If that’s the case, then these nurses can just work locally, right?

Not really, because finding work in the Philippines may not be that easy anymore. According to the same PNA data, the demand for nurses in the Philippines has remained stagnant for the last two years.

So if new nurses can’t find work abroad and can’t also work in the Philippines, what are they supposed to do?

Hmm… that’s one critical condition for Filipino nurses these days.

this is a reply to DID U KNOW’S comment.

    TO DID U KNOW:
oo nakakaawa nga iiwan ang pamilya pero mas nakakaawa kung wala kang maipakain at maibigay na future para sa kanila. maiintindihan mo din yan pag dating ng time na magkakapamilya ka. swerte mo lang sa ngayon at hindi mo pa problema ang pera. oo kahit papaano may pag asa pa rin sa pinas pero para sa mga nurses dito WALA kasi sobrang naeexploit na sila dito ang the only solution is to work outside the counrty. I feel for your gf be supportive to her wag kang selfish.

Guys at least have a plan B in life ..else you end up having false hopes.

Hundreds of thousand na Nurses na ang nasa pilipinas ksama na ako sa alang job as a nurse, my question is..bat hindi na lumalabas sa news marami alang work na nurse? bat yung mga nursing school tangap pa ng tangap? mga walang malasakit!!!!! tapos pag medyo matanda ka na hindi ka na tatangapin sa work .. ang last question ko me pagmamahal pa ba sa bansa natin? ikaw mahal ka ba ng Congressman mo? ng mga pulitiko mo? coz theyre the once who should run the country not us OFW’s ….ikaw love ko thats why im informing you to have another plan in life and at least come and prepare yourself for any eventualities..to whom it may concern I LOVE YOU

This is a response to Ron Says.

I went to see the forecast. You are talking 2020 and at that point quite a number of people that are attending nursing school here in the US or have just recently graduated will be very old by the time the jobs are available. They will be part of the population that will require a nurse to service them. The jobs for nurses that graduated from the US are no longer there…the amount of hospital closings are enormous across the state. You need to read more than one article to come to your conclusion and need to really think it through.
