The battle for supremacy among group buying sites in the Philippines continues to heat up, with most sites resorting to massive advertising on Google and Facebook. But when advertising online, isn’t it unethical (and possibly illegal) to use your competitors’ keywords to deceive customers into believing that you are who you are not?

For example, we have screenshots below showing Ensogo advertising themselves as “Cash Cash Pinoy” and “Deal Grocer Philippines” while another site, Metrodeal, is advertising themselves as “Emsogo.”

I don’t know if these tactics of playing dirty bode well with their customers.

For the uninitiated, group buying sites are websites that rely on the power of collective buying in order to reduce the price of a merchant’s goods and services. These sites prove to be popular among Filipinos looking for a bargain, with around 40+ group buying sites currently operating in the Philippines alone.

With such sites mushrooming in number week after week, the market seems to be saturating already. This is probably the reason why some of them have started bombarding Google Adsense and Facebook with their ads — but does that mean they should deceitfully use NOT their own keywords, but their competitors’ names in order to promote themselves?

Ensogo advertises as “Cash Cash Pinoy” and “Deal Grocer”

For example, a few days ago while browsing several articles on PinoyMoneyTalk.com, we saw a Google Adsense ad unit featuring Ensogo Philippines using the terms “Cash Cash Pinoy” and “Deal Grocer Philippines.”

The ads clearly were for Ensogo, the ad links at the bottom.

Metrodeal advertises as “Emsogo”

Another group buying site, Metrodeal, seems to be using the same strategy of using a competitor’s keyword, although with a twist. In one ad we saw online, Metrodeal uses the keyword “Emsogo” — an obvious play on the spelling of Ensogo. We can only surmise that Metrodeal’s goal is for customers to think that Emsogo and Ensogo are the same so that they will click on the ad but when you do, you actually go to Metrodeal’s site.

This practice of using the keywords of competitors in order to bring traffic to your site is tantamount to deceptive advertising. Here are screenshots of those misleading ads.

Group buying sites customers, what do you think of this practice?

What can you say about this ads from groupon? I think it’s just a paid post from groupon. You’re searching for ads of competitors but not saying anything about groupon.

This is ‘sue’-able, yes? I think using the names of competitors as search tags is akin to utilizing someone else’s trademark without the proprietor’s permission. Hope the guys from the group sites see this. :) Lawsuits are potentially abound given this revelation. good luck, guys! haha

I havent bought anything from Ensogo but i have bought several from dealgrocer and cashcashpinoy and i am most satisfied. Maybe these 2 are among the trusted ones that’s why it’s their audience/customers being lured to the false site

Where can we report misleading ads. From these group buying sites?

I buy vouchers from Ensogo and whenever I get a problem with my vouchers, I call them right away and they solve it as soon as possible. From what I noticed on their Facebook fan page, they always try to answer the queries posted on their wall.

I also saw some complaints that their comments were deleted by Ensogo but when I checked the fan page I can see their comments. I think the Ensogo customer was just over reacting.

Ensogo is also a victim of false advertisement from their competitors. I saw a misleading ad when I Google searched Ensogo http://www.freeimagehosting.net/99675

i just want to share my bad incident with that group buy site called
ensogo and their scam resorts world buffet deal. the friend who invited me
    blogged about it:

ensogo unfortunately is getting quite popular for their misleading fraud
ads. it seems like they are growing too fast to keep up with their many
promises on their website, sad to say.

who wants to join us to file a complaint against ensogo for their scam and fraud at dti and
nbi? their landline never works, i am so disgusted that it seems like
ensogo is becoming more and more of a lie. they already ripped me off
with their zest air deal hoopla. will call now my friends at the media
    to report them.

If you see an ad that you think is deceptive, CLICK ON IT.  A click is more expensive than an impression.
