Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW): Basic Demographic Data

Every year, it is estimated that more than a million Filipinos leave to work abroad, or around 4,500 Filipinos every day.
Data from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) shows that roughly 9.5 million to 12.5 million Filipinos currently work or reside abroad. This translates to around 10-11% of the total Philippine population.
Training/OJT fee of nurses illegal under new bill

A bill banning public and private hospitals in the Philippines from requiring the payment of “training fees” from nurses have been approved by the House of Representatives on December 17.
If approved into law, the bill would make illegal the policy of hospitals of collecting fees in exchange for providing nurses with work experience.

Saw an interesting but frightening news article at the Asian Wall Street Journal the other day. I had the printed version but I can’t find the online version of the article so I’ll just explain it here.
Basically, the Asian Wall Street Journal is saying that based on their research, it might take at least seven (7) years before job losses due to the economic recession will recover. This is based on the experience of the global economy in past recessions.

Most recent graduates are probably happy that school has come to an end but when the graduation rites are over, the reality starts to kick in. Getting a job in this country is not easy.
In January this year, the Philippines recorded a high 7.4% unemployment rate, according to the National Statistics Office. Although this was already a 0.4% nominal improvement from last year, it still translates to more than 2.7 million FIlipinos out of work.
But this does not mean jobs are not really available. In fact, more than 3,000 jobs in foreign-owned firms in the country are up for grabs in a two-day employment expo at the Glorietta Activity Center in Ayala, Makati.
