Say goodbye to Google Adsense Referrals
July 2, 2008
And now, the end is really here.
Back in January, Google announced that its Adsense Referrals program will be retired in all regions except North America, Latin America, and Japan. Two weeks later, it backtracked and offered the program again although with new conditions.
Today, Google posted and announced in its blog that the program will soon be terminated:
We’re constantly looking for ways to improve AdSense by developing and supporting features which drive the best monetization results for our publishers. Sometimes, this requires retiring existing features so we can focus our efforts on the ones that will be most effective in the long term. For this reason, we will be retiring the AdSense Referrals program during the last week of August.
Publishers are advised to immediately remove the Adsense Referral codes from their sites because starting August, Referral ads will no longer be displayed.
Overall, I had a good experience with the Adsense Referrals program. My first peak earnings was in October 2007 when I earned $23 in one day from Referrals alone. This, however, was beaten one month later when my Adsense Referral earnings reached $71 in just one day. After the rules were changed in January, my Referral earnings dropped and the normal income from Referrals alone became just a meager $20 per month.
Will you miss the Adsense Referrals program once it’s totally gone?

It is somehow sad. Because firstly, 40% of my earnings comes from their Referral Ads. But it’ll be ok. Because I have an alternative for it, which is BidVertiser. I really can see the improvement of BidVertiser.
Anyway, I think Google has the right move in closing their Referral Program in order for them to improve and focus on the content ads.
