‘Papaya Dance’ craze invades America
March 24, 2008
Forget the Chicken Dance, forget the Macarena, because the Papaya Dance is now becoming a big hit worldwide.
US TV show Good Morning America (GMA) recently featured the Papaya Dance, popularized by Edu Manzano of the TV game show Pilipinas: Game K N B? (Philippines: Are You Ready?), with the GMA hosts even mimicking the steps.
Take a look:
The hosts wonder why the dance is called the Papaya Dance. Well, I don’t know either.
Anyway, the song actually originated from Poland and was a worldwide hit back in the ’70s. It was written and sung by Polish singer Urszula Dudziak. Apparently Miss Dudziak is aware of the dance and she even did the Papaya Dance herself in this interview!
And here’s Kristie Kenny, US Ambassador to the Philippines, gamely dancing as well “to commemorate US-Philippine friendship”!
