Who made money from the Pacquiao-Marquez fight?

March 17, 2008

Now that the “Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Unfinished Business” match is over, a lot of Filipinos are rejoicing not just because Manny Pacquiao defeated Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez but also because some of them profited from the fight in one way or another.

Who made money from the fight? Here are some of them.

1. Cable operators. According to the president of the Philippine Cable TV Association (PCTA), cable firms enjoyed a 25% increase in pay-per-view clients because of the Pacquiao-Marquez bout. Despite high pay-per-view fees — Global Destiny, for instance, charged P800 while Skycable charged P1,500 — thousands of Filipinos still bought it.

2. Cinemas and theaters that showed the fight. SM Cinemas sold tickets priced at P450-P550 in exchange for a Dolby-surround, big-screen presentation of the fight. The fee to watch it at UP Diliman’s Film Center was P300, while Shangri-La Mall in EDSA charged a pricey P700 to those who wanted to watch the fight. Saucy!

3. Restaurants and shops. Sales of restaurants and stores that offered free public viewing of the fight supposedly increased as Filipinos who couldn’t afford pay-per-view flocked to those places. (O baka naman tumambay lang sila dun at hindi bumili?)

4. Small-time entrepreneurs. I know some families with pay-per-view subscription who charged their neighbors P10-20 per person to let them watch the fight in their homes. Entrepreneurship at its best indeed!

5. SEO bloggers. Bloggers such as Dexter, Marghil, Karlo, Dark Knight, and Team Pilipinas have been optimizing their blogs for the “Pacquiao-Marquez” keywords for some time now, and surely the efforts have paid off. Several people searching for the results of the rematch or ways to watch the fight for free dropped by their keyword-optimized blogs, increasing traffic — and income. (Balato naman sa increased earnings, mga prends!)

But do you know who actually earned the most from this fight? Of course, none other than the new World Boxing Council super featherweight champion himself, Pac-Man, ang Pambansang Kamao ng Pilipinas — Manny Pacquiao!

The Inquirer reported that Pacquiao is set to receive nearly $5 million from the televised fight. Yup, $5 million as in just a little over P200 million. Ka-ching!

Talk about the fight in our Pacquiao vs. Marquez II discussion thread in the PMT Forum.
