UP Centennial Celebration 2008 starts this week
The country’s premier institution of higher learning, the University of the Philippines (UP), is now 100 years old. Established on July 18, 1908, UP has since produced leaders in both government and industry, trailblazers in the arts and humanities, and innovators in science and engineering.

The year 2008 is UP’s Centennial Year and was officially declared one by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through Proclamation No. 913. The celebration officially begun on July 18, 2007 and will last until December 31, 2008.
Following are highlights of activities related to this year’s UP Centennial celebration. A complete calendar of activities from January to December 2008 can be found in the UP Centennial website.
UP System Centennial Kick-Off - January 8, 2008 (Tuesday)
9:00 - 10:00 a.m. — Mass in UP Manila
10:15 - 12:00 a.m. — Celebration Program in UP Manila
12:00 - 4:00 p.m. — Motorcade from UP Manila to UP Diliman
4:00 - 4:30 p.m. — Skydivers with banners land in open area next to Plaridel Hall
4:30 - 7:00 p.m. — UP Centennial Kick-off Program
7:00 - 9:30 p.m. — Concert at the Amphitheater
9:30 - 10:00 p.m. — Fireworks
UP Centennial 2008 Planner

You still have a chance to purchase the UP Centennial Planner by visiting the University Student Council (USC) office at Room 206 of Vinzons Hall from 4-6 p.m. on January 7 to 11 and from 1-5 p.m. on January 12.
The planner costs P380.00 for currently enrolled UP students and P500.00 for UP alumni.
To those wishing to buy the planner but cannot go to UP Diliman, you may send your orders online.
100 Kuwentong Peyups
A series of stories about life in the University of the Philippines will appear in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Philippine Star throughout 2008. Past students of any UP unit are invited to submit their stories that may be included in “100 Kuwentong Peyups” (100 UP Stories).

Submissions should:
- Be a maximum of 1,000 words
- Be a personal experience and written in the 1st person
- Emotionally engaging (funny, sad, scary, etc. )
- Make the connection between the story and a life lesson that serves you well today
- If possible, please include an old photo/scanned memento
Send your submissions to 100kwentongpeyups@campaignsandgrey.net. Include your name, college or unit and course, year you entered UP, student number (if you remember it), and email address.
You will be contacted via email if your story is selected for publication.
UP Centennial Car Plate

The UP Centennial car plate is available at Php 2,000.00 per piece and can be used from September 2007 to July 2008, as approved and authorized by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).

UP Academic Oval - The Walk

Inscribe your name in special commemorative tiles surrounding UP’s famous walkway - the Academic Oval — which will be developed into The Walk.
The Acad Oval will be rehabilitated using modular blocks and flanked on both sides with pre-fabricated concrete sand finish are leaf patterns and the alumni donor’s name.
The first 1,000 tiles will require a donation of P20,000 each; the next 1,000 at P25,000 each and the remaining tiles will be P30,000 each.
