Where to buy cheap Apple iPhone in the Philippines

Unauthorized Apple iPhones are already being sold in the Philippines -- at a price.

Apple’s iPhones are due to arrive in the Philippines and the rest of Asia in 2008 but hundreds of these exclusive cellphones are already showing up in several mobile phone retailers in the country.

We went to Virra Mall in Greenhills and found at least three stores selling open-line, ready-to-use 8GB iPhones for as low as P30,000 (US$714).

One store sells the iPhone for a flat price of P35,000 (US$833). Apparently unaware that the phones are unauthorized units, the store seller told us that the iPhone is expensive because it just “came out of the market” several weeks ago.

“Bago ‘yan, two weeks pa lang na-launch kaya mahal (It’s new, just came out of the market two weeks ago that’s why it’s pricey),” he declares.

Apple iPhones being sold in Greenhills are open line and all ready for use, meaning there is no need for laborious hacking procedures.

Another store sells the iPhone for P33,000 (US$785). The seller told us that the unit is open line and ready for use, meaning, one merely has to put a SIM card for it to work. No need for laborious hacking procedures.

The third store we went to is where we found the cheapest iPhone. A Filipino customer was inspecting the unit when we came. We asked the seller for another one, but got told the store carries only one iPhone.

Its price? “P30,000… sagad na (US$665… final price).”

But that’s not all. Recently we spotted a few 8 GB iPhones being sold online. This Auction.ph listing sells the iPhone for P25,500 (US$607) apiece. (Note: We are not related to the poster of the listing and we do not endorse the ad.)

P30,000 for an iPhone may not be expensive, but it may well be if it just stops working after a planned iPhone software update.

$600+ for an iPhone may not be expensive for the uber-geek or the Apple fanatic, but it may well just be if it suddenly stops working should Apple push through with the implementation of a planned iPhone software update.

Exchange Rate: P42.00 = US$1

The iPhone referred to above are all real but they are jailbroken or hacked versions so that they’ll work here in the Philippines. The prices vary depending on where you’re buying it, but based on what I’ve seen so far, the cheapest ones are being sold in Virra Mall in Greenhills.

i live in the u.s. and iphone isnt really that popular. don’t get me wrong i love apple products, i own an imac, a macbook, and an ipod, however, I think that the iphone is way too over priced for a phone who’s capability merely reflects that of nokia n series phones. N95 surpasses the iphone by a mile, eventhough, n95’s screen is not as big as the iphones but big enough for a regular phone itself.

They have the fake (Chinese-made) and the original iPhones. The genuine ones have been “hacked” in order to work in the Philippines. I’ve already seen a few people using iPhones here in the Philippines. So far, so good, they say.
