Best Performing Philippine Equity Mutual Funds (as of June 2007)

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Note: When analyzing mutual funds, you should not simply look at the NAVPS or Net Asset Value per Share. This number does not necessarily show whether the fund is performing well or not, but the change of the NAVPS over time does. Never assume that a fund with high NAVPS means it is generating high returns. You need to look at actual returns of the fund over a certain time period. But then again, be reminded that past performance is and will never be a guarantee of future results.

SEC charges Jonathan Mikula and Gabriel Frankewich of ‘PhoenixSurf.com’ with fraud

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) earlier this week confirmed something we already know. That PhoenixSurf (www.phoenixsurf.com), a popular autosurf "investment" program in 2006 which promised to pay 120% return in just 8 days, was an internet ponzi scheme and a fraud.

PhoenixSurf operators Jonathan Mikula, 21 years old, and Gabriel J. Frankewich, 29, were charged with securities fraud for running a ponzi autosurf program that raised $41.9 million in just four months from more than 20,000 investors worldwide.

According to the SEC press release, the defendants settled the charges, without admitting or denying the allegations, agreeing to a judgment permanently enjoining them from future violations of securities laws.

Mikula was ordered to pay a total of $106,671;  Frankewich, $96,345.79; and Phoenixsurf.com and New Millennium Entrepreneurs (NME) LLC amounts to be determined, but payment by Mikula and Frankewich was waived and civil penalties were not assessed, the SEC said.

New scandal in town: Performance Investments Products Corp. (PIPC)

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

FrancSwiss out, PIPC in.

Just as the FrancSwiss scam issue is showing signs of fizzling out, a new scandal has rocked the financial sector involving a Singaporean and hundreds of wealthy Filipino investors.

Last week, an investor of the foreign exchange trading firm Performance Investments Products Corporation (PIPC) filed a complaint with the NBI claiming that the owner of the company, Singaporean Michael H.K. Liew, has fled the country and disappeared, supposedly taking with him between US$140 million and US$250 million of investors’ funds.

Michael Liew (center), owner of PIPC, allegedly fled the Philippines this month taking millions of dollars of investors' money.

Meet other investors and discuss PIPC in the Performance Investments Products Corporation (PIPC) thread. Discuss the PIPC-related company, PFEC, in the Performance Foreign Exchange Corporation (PFEC) thread in the PMT Forum.
