E-gold wants to know which country you are in
March 30, 2007
Online payment currency e-gold now wants users to add the appropriate Country to the Point of Contact section.
If you just recently logged in to your e-gold account, you will see the note, "Please select the appropriate Country in your Point of Contact data"
Screenshot of the note and egold's explanation of the change after the jump.
According to egold, indicating the country will make it easier for them to contact the owner and send needed information via postal mail if ever the egold account got banned or lost password.
More importantly, though, the change has "the objective of preventing the use of e-gold by United States persons for unlawful online gambling," in line with the Security and Accountability For Every Port Act of 200, also known as the SAFE Port Act.
However, it doesn't seem like the account update is not a requirement to be able to continue using egold. I logged in to my egold account just a few minutes ago, did not add my Country information, but was still able to make a payment to another egold user.

would you recommend e-gold for someone Philippines-based like me? Would I be able to safely and affordably accept and withdraw payment? I looked at their site and there seems to be a complicated withdrawal procedure. do they even allow users from the Philippines? What would you recommend since PayPalis alsonot feasible?

Hi Manila Mom,
If your payor would be comfortable sending payments via egold, then good. Egold is a good payment method, although you need to be be wary of hackers and phishers. To encash your egold, you need to use ecurrency exchange sites, in particular, you can use PinoyGoldExchange.
There are other ways to receive payments but each method has its characteristics. You need to assess which one would suit you best. Start by going through the different ecurrency methods in the PMT Forum’s Ecurrency board.

Thanks so much. It’s good to see actual testimonials on the forum. It’s also good to have an alternative to PayPal, although most opportunities still specify PayPal (sigh).
I’ll be dropping by often to learn more, for sure.
