Performance returns of mutual funds in the Philippines (as of 11/10/2006)

November 13, 2006

Following is a summary of performance returns of Philippine mutual funds as of the week ended November 10, 2006.

As always, when analyzing mutual funds you should not simply look at the NAVPS or Net Asset Value per Share. This number does not necessarily tell you whether the fund is performing well or not, but the change of the NAVPS over time does. Never assume that a fund with a high NAVPS means it is generating high returns. You need to look at actual returns of the fund over a certain time horizon.

Micro-financing in the Philippines: Ur Van Ur Business

November 13, 2006

Daniel Bonifacio has gone a long way from cleaning rooms and mopping floors of a commercial bank. That was P77,000 ago.

Nowadays, the former janitor is busy with his sari-sari store and wholesale business, put up with micro-financing through the Center for Community Transformation Credit Cooperative or CCT.

"I have four kids and I believed then I could not put them through school with a janitor's salary," Tatay Daniel says.

"So I started selling fruits with P700 in capital, which was not enough," he relates. "Fortunately, I was able to join CCT and was allowed to borrow P2,000."

Tatay Daniel expanded his product line to charcoal and other articles that the urban poor like him needed.

"I took good care of that first loan, paying diligently because I know that's the way for me to stay in business," he says. "Later on, I was able to borrow P5,000."

‘Your limited PayPal Philippines account has again been limited. Goodbye!’

November 12, 2006

Several PayPal Philippines users, mostly eBay buyers, have recently complained that PayPal selectively limits certain accounts. This happens, it is reported, after a user has logged in to the account or, worse, after an online purchase is almost complete — that is, the transaction is debited to the credit card but frozen in PayPal and the seller is not credited for the transaction. What happens then is the user ends up with a frozen PayPal account, confirmed charges against the credit card, and an unpaid seller who won't send the product because payment is not received.

This is "selective" because it does not happen to all PayPal Philippines accounts. Some have reported that they logged in to their account one day only to find a notice from PayPal that their account has been frozen pending additional verification. Some said they tried paying for a product purchased online but once the transaction is debited against the credit card, payment is held by PayPal and the account has been limited.

Uh-oh, looks like users in the Philippines are already starting to experience the horrors of using PayPal.

The Other Marriage Contract

November 11, 2006

It’s close to December, the peak month for weddings in the Philippines. Budding newlyweds would be in the thick of wedding preparations, making honeymoon travel plans, house-hunting perhaps, or picking out baby names. But in planning a new life together, one very important subject is often regarded by engaged couples as taboo –- that of prenuptial agreements.

A prenuptial agreement, or a prenup, is an accord in which a couple sets the rules to govern their property, debts, income and expenses.

Most couples reject the discussion of prenups for fear of raising notions of distrust. The fact remains that a marriage isn’t just a union of hearts, minds and bodies, but a union of assets as well. Making an effort to respect that fact is crucial to a healthy marriage.The other marriage contract

All in the family

Prenuptial agreements are not just for the wealthy. Filipino values command respect for hard-earned family resources, which we count among our most jealously guarded assets. Money and property matters concern every Filipino home.

Drawing a prenup has been made even more essential for Philippine marriages by the provisions of the Family Code of 1988, as discussed in this article excerpt:

Use online banking to manage your finances better

November 10, 2006

Great strides in technology have made life a lot easier. Thirty years ago, anyone who had to transact with the bank had to go to his own branch, bring his passbook, fill up forms, fall in line, and then wait for his turn.

The advent of automated teller machines (ATMs) in the '80s made it possible for people to withdraw cash and do other banking transactions even after banking hours or on weekends – all in less than five minutes.

Then came phone banking which allowed depositors to do the same without leaving their house or office.

With the Internet age, consumers do not even have to wait for a phone operator. A computer and an Internet connection will allow anyone to transact with their bank at the click of a mouse.

HYIP Update: Still no news on 12DailyPro refunds, it’s just report, report, report

November 8, 2006

As scheduled, the First Interim Report of the 12DailyPro receiver was submitted to and heard for approval by the United States District Court Central District of California on October 23, 2006. In response to the report, the Court:

… having considered the First Interim Report of Permanent Receiver Thomas F. Lennon ("Receiver") for LifeClicks, LLC and 12DailyPro hereby orders as follows:

1. The Receiver's First Interim Report is hereby approved.
2. The receivership will continue pursuant to the Permanent Injunction Order and any supplemental orders issued by the Court.
3. The Receiver shall file another report to update the Court and parties in interest in approximately 180 days.

It is so ordered.

Hon. Stephen G. Larson
Judge, United States District Court

That means we can expect to see a second 12DailyPro update and report from the Receiver on or before April 2007. Will there be refund updates in that report? We can only hope, but personally I'm not betting on it.

What's the 12DailyPro First Interim Report all about anyway? Nothing much in there really, except for the usual legal blurbs and an explanation of who and how many were scammed by 12DP, how much was stolen, etc. For these details, read the Stats of a Scam: 12DailyPro’s $500M stash & other figures article.

12DailyPro refund and chargeback notice from the receiver

November 8, 2006

Just to reiterate, here are information sent on September 3 by Thomas F. Lennon, Court-appointed receiver for 12DailyPro (12DP), regarding refunds and chargebacks:

  • investors who used credit cards for a credit transaction are not prohibited from initiating a charge back but the rules of the credit card issuer regarding the chargeback period determine the time allowed;
  • investors that used checks, electronic fund transfers and debit cards are prohibited from initiating a charge back by the Orders issued by the Court;
  • all investors and creditors are enjoined from initiating any legal action against 12Daily Pro, LifeClicks or Charis Johnson;
  • all investors — foreign or domestic, used EMO, egold, or Stormpay, etc. — will be treated equally under the law;
  • any distribution plan proposed by the Receiver will be done on an equitable basis regardless of the length of time the investor was invested in 12DP.

Actual text from the Receiver' report:

As previously noted in the letters sent to investors/members, investors who used credit cards for a credit transaction are not prohibited from initiating a charge backthrough their credit card issuer. Investors that used checks, electronic fund transfers and debit cards are prohibited from initiating a charge back by the Orders issued by the Court. The Orders are also posted on the web site. Please note that in many situations the period within which you could have initiated a charge back may have passed. The rules of the credit card issuer determine the time allowed. The rights of consumers to dispute electronic transfers are limited to unauthorized debits or errors in the amount of debits, but do not provide a right to reverse a transfer because the consumer has discovered thatthe recipient was perpetrating a fraud. Moreover, all investors and creditors are enjoined from initiating any legal action against 12Daily Pro, LifeClicks or Charis Johnson.

All investors, foreign and domestic will be treated equally under the law. Investors who used EMO and E-Gold as payment processors will be treated the same as investors that used StormPay. Any distribution plan proposed by the Receiver will be done on an equitable basis. The length of time an investor was invested in the program will not be a considered in distributions.
