Do you have what it takes to be the 2006 Philippine “Entrepreneur of the Year?”

Nominations are now open for the Entrepreneur of the Year Philippines 2006 Awards. The Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) Awards is a prestigious annual search started in the US by Ernst & Young in 1986, but has now spread to more than 40 countries in six continents.

The aim of EOY is to identify, acknowledge, and encourage entrepreneurs who, through their energy and passion, help bolster their country's economy, underpin the future, and create wealth and employment for many people.

In the Philippines and in other countries, the program generates hundreds of nominations from outstanding companies year after year. Several business people are recognized in the annual country awards, with the program culminating in the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards. The first Philippine Entrepreneur of the Year (2003) was Mr. Tony Tan Caktiong of Jollibee Foods Corporation who went on to win the World Entrepreneur of the Year 2004 Award.

What are the award categories

Master Entrepreneur. An individual who has maintained management excellence over a sustained period of time. The business must have been founded more than five years ago; if nominee is the founder, he or she must still be active in the management of the business.

Small Business Entrepreneur. An individual engaged in industry and/or services whose total assets, inclusive of those arising from loans but exclusive of the land on which the particular business entity’s office, plant, and equipment are situated, must not have a value exceeding PhP100 million.

Industry-Specific Entrepreneur. An individual primarily associated with Information and Communications Technology, the specific industry to be honored this year. This individual’s recent achievements must exemplify company building at its best in this industry.

Woman Entrepreneur. A woman entrepreneur who has shown exemplary management excellence over a sustained period of time.

Social Entrepreneur. An individual who has applied practical, innovative and market-oriented approach to his or her business or has created products and services that address the challenges faced by communities, help solve complex social problems, and benefit the marginalized and the poor. Their business may focus on enterprise development, health, education, environment, labor conditions or human rights. This award is intended to celebrate the successful entrepreneur’s individual efforts to bring about social change.

Who can be nominated

To be eligible for an award, a nominee must be:

  • a Filipino citizen;
  • an owner of a privately held business that is at least two years old;
  • primarily be responsible for its recent performance; and
  • still active in top-level management if he or she is the founder of a publicly held company.

Who can nominate

Anyone associated with a successful entrepreneur: professional advisor, customer, supplier, banker, lawyer, employee, spouse, or even the entrepreneur himself/herself.

How are winners selected

Nominees will be short-listed based on a financial data ranking system used by all Entrepreneur Of The Year participating countries. An independent panel of judges composed of distinguished personalities from government, business, and academe will select the category winners and Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines winner.The judging criteria include growth in turnover, profit, and employee number. Other factors include degree of innovation, development of creative and ingenious production, marketing and selling techniques, and extent of expansion into local and international markets.

How to Join

The nomination process requires the candidates to submit:

  • a completed nomination form
  • supporting documents, including the company’s financial statements and essays

The Entrepreneur Of the Year Awards Committee will then interview the nominees and conduct due diligence to arrive at a short list of finalists.

February 2007 - Announcement of Finalists
March 2007 - Awards Banquet
June 2007 - World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award Ceremonies
