PIPS Update: Bail reduced for Marsdens as more charges pile up

October 31, 2006

Bryan John Marsden of the PIPSCorp scam. Malaysia's The New Straits Times reported on October 11 that Bryan Marsden and his wife Phan Sew Ken of the now infamous PIPS scam program had their bail reduced by the trial court, but the day did not end well for the two as additional charges of money laundering were filed against them that same day.

Here's a copy of the news report from the Malaysian newspaper (online link now inaccessible):

Dirty money accused faces 7 more charges

SEREMBAN: A British national and his Malaysian wife, facing 97 counts of money laundering amounting to RM77 million, had their bail reduced by RM100,000 on appeal yesterday.

After hearing arguments from the prosecution and defence counsel, Sessions Court judge Allaudeen Ismail allowed the two — Bryan John Marsden and Phan Sew Ken — bail of RM400,000 instead of RM500,000 imposed when they were first charged on Aug 30.

Marsden, 58, had appealed for his bail to be reduced to RM100,000 and Phan, 50, asked the court to set hers at RM50,000.

They were each charged at the Sessions Court here with 41 counts of collecting funds, totalling RM26.7 million, from illegal online activities.

Later, Marsden was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to face seven more charges involving funds totalling RM7 million. All the offences were allegedly committed between Aug 12, 2003 and Jan 4, 2005.

These offences, under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2001, are punishable by a fine of up to RM5 million, or a maximum of five years’ jail, or both, on each count.

On Sept 19, they were back at the Sessions Court here to face another six charges of accepting a total of RM11.78 million.

The couple allegedly committed the offences between Jan 4 and June 14 last year at the EON Bank in Taman Semarak, Nilai, near here.

Allaudeen fixed Nov 24 for re-mention of the case.

Filipinos more interested in “sex” than “money” (Part 2)

October 30, 2006

The Hypothesis

Use search terms other than “money” in our preceding “sex-vs.-money” Google search analysis and results would have been different.

Fig 1. Google searches from the Philippines: sex vs. money

Sex vs. money - Google searches from the Philippines

The Experiment

In Google Trends (www.google.com/trends), compare the number of Philippine-based searches of the term “sex” with business- and income-related keywords aside from “money” such as “earn online,” “make money online,” “internet income,” “online job,” and “online business.”

The Results

Each of the five terms — “earn online,” “make money online,” “internet income,” “online job,” and “online business” — does not have “enough search volume to show graphs.” In other words, Google Trends is unable create trend graphs because in the Philippines, very few searches of those keywords were made.

How to deal with debtors who are not paying? Shame them

October 28, 2006

Here's one "best" practice entrepreneurs won't learn in any school: If you've tried all options and yet debtors still aren't paying, try shaming them.

Bartolome Malacura, a 70-year old sari-sari (retail) store owner in Davao, did precisely this by advertising the names of his debtors in front of his store. Believe it or not, the plan worked, said Mr. Malacura. Read on.

Filipinos more interested in “sex” than “money”

October 24, 2006

More Filipinos look for “sex” than “money” — in Google search, that is.

Google Trends (www.google.com/trends), a tool from Google Labs that charts how often a particular term is entered relative to the total number of searches done, has proven that Filipino internet users search for the keyword “sex” more often than the keyword “money.”

Google’s data for Philippine searches from 2004 up to 2006 shows that the number of searches for the term “sex” easily eclipsed the number of searches for the keyword “money,” which remained stagnant since 2004.

Searches for “sex” even experienced several spikes during the two-year horizon. (See Fig. 1)

Don’t just save money, save it wisely!

October 24, 2006

Your cash today will have a smaller value in the future if you don’t guard against inflation.

It pays to save and keep some money for the future — you’ll be prepared and won’t need to borrow when unexpected emergencies come up, and you’ll have enough to make that long-awaited purchase for a car or a similar asset you’ve long desired.

But while it is good to have cash available at all times, it is not wise to hold very large deposits. Experts say doing so is a misapplication of resources.

When cash is not king

To most businessmen, cash is king but even the most successful of them do not maintain very large deposits of cash. Most likely, their wealth will be spread out in various assets, from stocks to bonds, mutual funds, real estate, and finally, cash deposits at a smaller percentage compared to the other asset classes. Here are at least two reasons why their cash deposits are not that substantial:
